I got a pretty decent Mastercool 2-stage 5-cfm 25-micron pump for just over $200 from ackits.com. I don't know if they also carry Robinair.

You can use an a/c compressor as a vacuum pump

uh, i dont think that would pull a low enough vacuum. besides, i want a nice professional unit that i will only have to plug in and hook the yellow hose to when i want to use it.

If you went to Grainger or some place like that, I might bet a vacuum pump is interchangeable with an a/c compressor, just different fittings.

I too recommend Mastercool. It's what I have, and I think I paid about $200 for it. For my purposes (vehicles and occasional appliance or home HVAC use) it is perfect. Robinair are nice but a little pricey.
Whatever you do, don't get one of those venturi vacuum pumps. In my experience the vacuum is so weak that they are only usable when it's 100 degrees outside AND you have the engine running with the hood down generating as much heat as possible (to aid in boiling off moisture). Plus they can take a year or two of life off your air compressor...
