cmac,

you definitely understand the situation there and know the tactical problem of waging a war with NK. having an uncle as a colonel in the SK air force was definitely an eye opener to the situation over there.

as you correctly pointed out, there is no armed win-win situation with NK. thus, as i said in my long winded post above, peace with a large stick behind our back with strong alliances with their allies is the only solution. And as i said, we cannot come to the table without preconditions---in any situation. and yes, the NKs see that as a position of weakness. it is a cultural thing. its very korean, in fact. more so to a megalomaniac like KJI. it will feed his ego, bolster his standing amongst the military, and be broadcasted to the entire NK population through those very annoying, overly dramatic female newscasters on state television! :p

I never said people in our government haven't lied. People lie. It's a fact of life. Most of us adjust our behavior accordingly.

Clearly, as dCulkin pointed out, preconditions treat everybody who comes to the table equally by making overt the rules and conditions necessary for agreement.

And nobody else lies?

bob, you should write less and read more. I said "post-Taliban" govt, not the Taliban govt.

I don't know if NK is a good example of cowboy diplomacy working well. Last time I checked NK still had nukes and besides those were mainly multi-party talks with the US playing the cowboy on the sidelines.

Regardless of the cause & effect you can't deny that the US alliance with former Sunni insurgents has been critical to the at least temporary success of the surge.

If you're one of those who still thinks the Iraq invasion was a good idea, you might want to check out Bush's former press secretary's new book. Here's an article about it.
