300E Auto trans help

1986 MB 300E auto trans,
was on the fwy going about 75 mph, then out of the blue the trans starts down shifting to the lowest gear. This is a four speed atuo trans. I checked the modulator lines no leaks. Could the modulator be going out?
Please help.
