I think I AM going to buy a Mac for personal stuff and just use my Winders machine for work stuff from now on.

Of course, I do spend a lot of my working hours on this site. . . .

That's just letting the machine beat you. Spend another $2K because you cannot fix the problem...........there must be a solution to the perpetual slowdowns that nearly every MS machine inevitably suffers.

The machine beat ME a long time ago. I have no interest in fiddling around with my tools just to be able to use them. I have no interest in understanding all of the technical aspects of a phone just so I can call somebody, a saw, just so I can cut a board, or a car, just so I can get around town. To me, if I have to know everything about how the tool works just so I can USE the tool, then the tool isn't worth much to me.

I want my tools to be an extension of myself. If they ARE, then they're useful. If they're NOT, then they aren't worth much because I'm thinking about the tool more than I am about the work I want to do.

Yes, I understand the sentiment. I tend to run toward the opposite vein............I'll do whatever it takes to fix the machine rather than bring it to someone or toss in the towel. Naturally, this results in machines that are never quite up to perfect function most of the time.

But, after five years of relatively trouble free performance, I, too, have decided that a new machine is worth the satisfaction.

I have very little patience with things that don't work right. Like it or not, the computer industry hypes its products as if they work first time everytime, right out of the box. We all know that's not the case, but on some level I still expect them to work as advertised.

When I attempted to use Norton's technical support on Saturday morning to figure out how to fix my computer, I was told there was an hour wait after which I would be charged by the minute for their help. I had NEVER called any software company for support . . . EVER, before that. that's in 20 years of using a computer.

I no longer have any sympathy for the software companies when their stuff gets pirated. If they aren't willing to help me when I've already paid them for it, screw 'em. They can all go to hell. I have some antivirus software now that was free and seems to work ten times better than Norton or Macaffee.

So does Firefox hold on to memory the way Winders used to do?

Windows is still a memory pig.... Always has been, always will be.... Until they rewrite their kernel. Its been almost the same kernel since 98, just heavily updated.

Thats why I like my Mac. The code is neat, and and does not use crazy amounts of memory like winders. I can seriously do twice the amount of work on my mac (processing power wise) than on my windows pc, as the coding is better, and applications use less memory. The Adobe Suite is amazing on it.

If you want super fast, run Linux. Mac's run open BSD which is a Unix like system and is fast. I agree with what was posted earlier, even with the new kernel, Vista is a big memory pig.

Some of the biggest memory hogs on a Windows machine are Norton and Macafee. Uninstall those and run AVG free. Great program and the new 8.0 version is really nice.

Oh yeah, you're welcome Tom. Glad to help.

I'm from the era when products were generally expected to work by the time companies put them out on sale. They didn't get them halfway developed and THEN finish them AFTER the public had bought and suffered with them for months or years. Maybe I'm just weird that way.
