Why do you think people call them "religious nuts"?
I don't agree with religion either. I don't even see the need for it. I see it as a hemaroid on the butt of life. IOW, it is worth than useless in my book. Still, I don't feel that this is a religious issue. The thing is that unless we see direct action, how do you expect the cops to act?

Alter? Or did you mean Altar? Or perhaps you meant that the priest was trying to Alter the boy?

What part of "punish the criminal" are folks missing here? US laws are mostly focused on individual actions. The biggest exception that comes to mind are the RICO "organized crime" provisions where an enterprise can be targeted.

We have the laws, it's just that the state of Texas decided to take a shortcut.

Presumption of innocence is such a quaint custom in these sophisticated times.

they say their religion is that of the Mormon church before they denounced polygamy. If that is true then this "religion" is nothing more then an excuse to have more then one wife. To me that sounds like their beliefs are guided by what is in their pants, not what is in their soul.

The whole thing is a serious dilemma. Taking toddlers away from their mothers sorta makes for a cure that's worse than the disease. I heard one possible solution on the radio that would have rounded up the fathers instead.

I'll just bet if you took the time to learn about Mormonism that you might find some sort of redeeming value in some of their tenants.

As with any religion and with many atheists, they can believe some things that I find kind of silly. So what? What's a world like that doesn't allow for silliness?

I already posted that I think Mormons are great people. I'm just saying that if polygamy is the only difference, then i think its gotta be about the sex. and we have laws against that!

You know what I like about you? You live in a simple, unsophisticated world with just two colors presented on the logical palette. Please keep us up-to-date on societal perspectives and current events in your neck of the woods. Don't forget to let us know when your clan discovers Bronze.

Well uhhh . . . . you sir are in the virtual presence of a genuine offspring of Mormon polygamy. My paternal grandmother's grandfather had two wives, lived in SLC for a time before heading to Mexico in order to keep both his wives, and likely rubbed elbows with Mitt Romney's ancestors (oh the shame . . . . the Romney part, I mean).

It's a tough one. From what I can gather, the church back in the day had a really strong work and health ethic. They were big on dietary health -- no tobacco, alcohol or coffee. Sugar was a no-no and meat was recommended only for about 2 days a week. From what I've read, they built some gorgeous cities in short order.

In frontier settings, I can imagine that many Mormon men looked good to women who hadn't found much else to their liking, what with the upheavals of the westward expansion.

Just saying polygamy might not have been just a "me so horny" thing.

BTW, I dropped out of the church years ago. Long story.

I don't believe that it was a "me so horny" thing back then. I'm not Mormon, but i come from farming families, large families, why you might ask? well because a larger family means more hand to work on the farm. but that is no longer the shape of the modern family.

I can see why if you were going to try and tame the Utah territory then maybe more wives and more children would be a blessing... but the world has changed, and so has the Mormon church.

I don't know if you caught my earlier post, but I have no problems with Mormons.

But these people in this modern world have no reason to be doing what they are doing. and yeah, the only way it makes any since to me is "me so horny"
