Defensive Driving - best method?

I haven't had a ticket stick to me since 1989, and I haven't taken Defensive Driving since 1989 either. A lot has changed.

What's the most efficient means of getting this over with? DVD? Online? Take the f'n class?

You have a choice? In WI., you only get the class...

What'd you get the ticket for? Are you hoping it will clear off the record before your insurance company sees it?

Do you have to reduce your points with a class?

If so, I haven't heard of any other way that will count unless you actually go to the classroom.

The answer is going to vary from state to state. In Texas your best option is deferred adjudication. Basically you pay a bunch of court costs and promise to behave yourself for (typically) 90 days. If you don't get another ticket during the agreed period, the court dismisses your ticket at the end. And you don't have to suffer through 6 (or is it 8?) hours of defensive driving. Dollar costs are about the same between DA, DD, and just paying the fine, so there's not any money to be saved one way or the other. Just phone up the clerk of the court, ask if they'll go this way, and find out the particulars required of you. Easy peasey - though I'm assuming you're not up on intoxication manslaughter or some such thing.

...and it's the way to go if you don't want points against your insurance...especially if you haven't had a ticket in decades!

Best tactic I know is to always anticpate that everyone (besides me) on the road is a total jackass, and will always do the wrong thing. Then I look for how I can escape when they do stupid stuff.

Keep a 4 second space between you and the guy in front of you. Difficult, I know. Seems like someone always want to crowd into that gap. Especially in DC area, where its difficult to keep a 2 second space.

Finally, when someone tailgates me, I simply pull onto the shoulder and let them go. Let the crash happen well in front of me.

The ticket was for 85 in a 70 - by DPS State Trooper - in a South Texas county. Usually, I can get deferred adjudication by hiring a lawyer, etc., but this is a county that three hours away from me and DPS isn't as easy to get off of.

So I either go all the way down there to save my butt on court day (and may end up with Defensive Driving anyway), or I just do the Def Driving course and get the ticket removed. In Texas, we don't use a point system and one ticket is acceptable by insurance companies.

I'm not familiar with the ins & outs of DPS vs. local yokels. I would think it worth a call to the court just to ask about DA - never hurts to ask. If the answer is no, at least not without an appearance, then I think DD is a no brainer. You can take DD in less time than it would take to appear that far away.

Online DD is probably the way to go. It is dreadfully dull and boring, but can be done in small snippets of time at your convenience. It's been ages, but either I or my spouse did it that way. The course involved watching a video segment, then answering a few questions at the end. Some of the questions are meant to verify that you actually watch the video - e.g. what color was the car?

So, which AMG were you driving when stopped?

Too bad he didn't try a Mercedes first.
