What was your biggest selling regret?

Here's mine. A 1963 Sunbeam Alpine Series II, featuring my son in the driver's seat.

I got set off by the new Get Smart movie. The lobby poster shows him driving a Sunbeam (Tiger, not an Alpine, but the same basic body).

That car was so much fun, but a few years after my son was born, when we were making good money my ex wanted us to own "family cars", so we sold it. I should have DTB 'ed her then, but instead I stayed long enough to make a second child.

After our daughter was born, she decided my 1967 Mustang was a chick magnet that had to go.
I had to make a decision. I thought the Mustang would appreciate in value, my ex was blimping out and I thought she would depreciate as a wife. I was right on both counts.

I sure wish I had the Sunbeam again.

None yet (but I kind of miss my old 1983 280E 5-speed), but I have a buying regret. In 2001, I could have bought an unrestored 1970 Chevelle LS5 396 with cowl induction hood for $10,000. It had 110k miles on it, was very driveable (one engine rebuild though), and good paint with no rust. I asked around the values of it and everyone said "that seller's crazy - it's not worth $10,000". Should have bought it.

1968 Plymouth Roadrunner, 1957 Studebaker Pickup, 1969 Jeep Commando

And last but not forgotten 1982 Izuzu I Mark Diesel -

Just the memories now

My biggest regrets were not my fault. They were sold by order of NYS to split assets in the divorce

in order of missing them daily:

1) The 1996 Impala SS it only had 24000 miles on it and was a rocketship

2) The 1957 Chevy Nomad. It was really bought for her to keep her out of a minivan, but i loved it

3) 1970 Buick GS 455 convertible

My other regrets...

the 1963 Corvair Monza convertible--I want another one

the 1977 Impala I learned to drive on

The 1967 GTO convertible the ex made me get rid of as it was "taking up all of my time"

the list goes on...

I regret selling every car I ever got rid of with two exceptions

1) the 1989 Ford Tempo - got rid of ot with 20000 miles on it

2) the 1985 1/2 Ford Escort died at 60K

Both were bought by the ex -- can you see a difference in car appreciation here

My 1993 Subaru Legacy Turbo, and my 1979 300CD are the only two that I regret selling, but sold due to the fact that they were both turning into money pits.

Fear Not. The country is full of Alpines, generally well under $10,000.00.

Kurt in Westchester, the big wheel in the Alpine Club always knows of a few for sale.

My biggest regret was a '33 Nash convertible sedan. Lord, could that thing perform on the highway.Powerful, comfortable and nearly silent in third.

But I had to have a sportscar,so the Nash was sacrificed upon the altar of lust and desire, along with 2 others for a vintage Vauxhall which is fast, loud and endearingly spartan.

Usually when I sell them I never look back.

I did miss my euro '84 280e five speed though....and my '83 240d with the 300d euro na motor.

So I ended up buying them both back, and I have them now.

I usually don't sell cars, so my biggest selling regrets have been

70's Fender Stratocaster, cream with maple neck, Schallers
70's Les Paul Custom, Dimarzio PAF and Super Distortion
60's Telecaster (removed the Fender "bigsby")
70's Jazz Bass
Ovation Custom Balladeer 12 String w/Barcus Berry
Fender Twin Reverb with 21" Altec Lansings

The 1967 one owner California Mercury Cougar with a 289 2v that was maroon with a black interior that I had mst of the way through law school.

When I sold it it had 148k on it and a rebuilt engine and transmission, and ran good. Had the interior upgrades on it and was lovingly kept.

Sold it in 1977 and got a Buick Skylark.

Got $1100 for it.

They wrapped it around a tree in a week.

My 61 Rambler Classic. Bought from the original owner who bought it when he was 71.

Had only 25k miles on her when I bought her in 1976. Included receipts for 25 oil change/lube/tire rotations, all done by the same guy.

I put over 100k miles on 'er in just over two years. Had to replace the head (aluminum!) and re-attach the manual tranny (every bolt had managed to vibrate loose ). That was it repair wise.

Got over 30mpg, had enough room inside to carry 6 dining room chairs, and the trunk was big enough to carry a disassembled dining room table. With the trunk lid closed. Front seat was a full bench that was split - both halves reclined to damn near flat. For sleeping.

Sold it for $300; $70 more than I'd paid for it. Have regretted it ever since.
