By that line of thinking it's better just to replace the tire outright instead of patching or plugging it. I’ve plugged many more tires than I could remember in all kinds of applications (street, track, and off-road) and have never had a single problem. If you ask me, you’re just burning money if you insist taking your tires to a shop to have them patched when plugging is possible. I’d be interested to hear someone describe a scenario in which a correctly done plug job failed.

The local Firestone does them for free if you bought the road hazard package from them.
Plugs suck I lost count of the number of them that I have seen leaking.

Kauffman Tire patches them for free, even if you've never bought anything there before.

well, I bought my wheel/tire set from a friend, so no road hazard warrenty
 next set of tires I buy I am going to spring for the hazard package or w/e tire rack does

Last time I had Les Schwab plug-patch my tire it was free too and I never bought any tires from them.
