Completely unrelated is the problem of Saddam Hussein's constant and repeated and oft-acted-on ambition to control Middle East oil.

Yes, colonialism does some awful things. In comparison to many colonies of many countries, our country did pretty well under British rule.

British rule also gave it's colonies some fundamentals of law that, properly nurtured, ensure a just and fair government and society is possible. In some countries the English language became the common language among disparate ethnic and social groups. It's a silly language, but it gave people a neutral means of communication that they still use and abuse.

If we compare the countries now in existence which are former British colonies with other former colonies of other countries, we would have to say that derivation from Britain was a hell of an advantage.

Sorry for you that your country was not left with 100% good. Still, I'd say it wasn't that bad when you see what it started out with when the British first arrived. Overall, looking at what it is today, I'd have to say that the benefits outweighed the negatives.
