Let's assume you are correct. If the government is incapable of resisting the siren call of special interests, why is it a good idea to give the government even more power?

Yes, but AFAIK this will not give the govt more power. It will in fact lead to more competition. Now the health insurance companies will be competing with the govt's own health plan. How's that bad? If you don't like the govt's health plan, don't use it. Actually if you already have employer-based insurance you might not even qualify. The details haven't been set yet, obviously.

IMV, not if participation in the health plan is voluntary, which Obama said it would be.

Voluntary? First I've heard of a voluntary universal government program.

The operative word there is IF. IF it is voluntary and IF our good friend Mr Obama can actually pull it off by getting congress to sign on. It MIGHT be a good idea if it doesn't get managed to death and we have another thing to bail out.
