Howard Stern fans?

I was just wondering how many of us are Howard Stern fans?

I used to think he was terrible and a no talent, self-absorbed, immature, potty-mouted, shock jock.

After I started listening to him (because there was nothing else remotely interesing on the radio in Washington), I realized he is a talented, self-absorbed, immature, potty-mouted, shock jock. He is an excellent interviewer. he can get things out of his guests that NObody else can.

To be honest, I was a big fan of him and Bubba the Love Sponge. There's not much that will shock me (Bubba came close a few times). But ever since G was born I just can't take the "retard" jokes and skits so I rarely listen anymore.

They are talented at what they do, even if you don't like it. Every time Gary or Wendy were on, or they did a "retard" skit before I just felt uncomfortable. After having a kid with Ds I can't listen to it without getting a pit in the stomach.

Well, I guess I can understand that. The one redeeming or somewhat redeeming thing about them is that they make fun of everything and everybody. It always amazed me that they could make fun of blacks, Puerto Ricans, Indians, gays, Chinese, etc etc. and yet all of those groups are wel-represented in their audience.

Kinda reminds me of one of my favorite Dirty Harry lines, "Harry's not prejudiced. He hates everybody."

Oh, I know he's an equal opportunity offender. I don't really know how to explain it other than I think it's because it's something that pertains to one of my kids and not the rest of us. Plus a lot of folks with learning disabilities don't have the ability to speak up for themselves. It's hard to put into words.

But I know it's hypocritical. Like I said, I used to enjoy listening to him before.

I guess I was wrong. Either that or all of the HS fans here are not willing to admit it.

I understand exactly what you mean, Swamp. Our attitudes reflect our life experiences. I guess we wouldn't be very human otherwise. I've generally never thought making fun of other people was funny, but somehow a lot of stuff on the radio goes right on by me without my thinking much about it.

I just find it funny that some guy the same age as I am has figured out a way to get paid 1/2 a billion dollars to act like he's still in the fourth grade. I guess it's good work, if you can get it.

I used to listen to him when he did mornings on terrestrial radio. I've heard his show once or twice on Sirius, and I can't say that the profanity he now uses has improved his show any.

I actually thought it was pretty funny when he used to have to use euphemisms. Hearing an adult talk about "Doodoo" etc. cracked me up. I like it fine now, though, when I have time to listen to him.

It's a helluva gig! Actually Stern is J.H.S./H.S. Bubba is far more lewd/profane/low brow/juvenile. They both found their niches, though!

I've got a number of friends who listen to him religiously. Like yourself (I'm assuming ) they don't fit the stereotypical Stern listener model. Well educated, successful business-types. Then you (had) me fitting the model.

His audience is one of the most valuable demographics in radio, as I understand it. A lot of goof balls call in, but I think there are a lot of highly-educated, successful, 22-40 year olds who listen to him. They also happen to be one of the most loyal listeners in radio.

I'm a fan.

I think the one thing that his show does is that it exposes things and shows them for what they really are.

Let me explain. Take Randy Carver, the guy from the KKK. A critic may say that Howard is supporting the KKK. What they are really doing is giving these guys rope to hang themselves with. By giving them airtime and letting them speak, the KKK guys, or whoever it may be, are showing the world what idiots they really are. You see how wrong racisim really is. I don't think the show even does it on purpose, at least I have never heard it explaind that way.

I had listened to his broadcast occasionally before he went to satellite. I am not entertained by profanity and feel his quality of his program has sunk below my personal standard. Or I am just getting old.

Then there is the Dana Plato interview but there is more to the story

As far as the profanity thing goes, I don't think Howard is anymore or less profane than most people I know. They talk pretty much like people in real day-to-day life do. There are exceptions, of course.

There's not the phoniness on his show that you see on nearly every other radio or TV show. I find that refreshing. I don't agree with him on everything, but he makes some pretty good points amidst all the profanity, joking around, and other things that people typically take issue with.
