Put your money in a jar and put it in the closet. At least you'll know where it is and that its safe.

The share of total federal income taxes paid by the top 1 percent of tax filers increased to 39.89 percent in 2006, while the tax share of the top 5 percent climbed to 60.14 percent. The income tax share of the top half rose to 97.01 percent, according to recent Internal Revenue Service (IRS) data. The tax shares are the highest on record for these groups based on comparable IRS data going back to 1986.
The share of adjusted gross income generated by the top 1 percent has also increased. This share was 22.06 percent in 2006, relative to a level of 20.81 percent reached during the height of the stock market bubble in 2000 (when the income tax share of the top 1 percent was 37.42 percent). Congressman Jim Saxton, ranking member of the Joint Economic Committee, made the following remarks on the IRS data: “The latest IRS data show that the share of the income tax burden borne by the top half of tax filers continues to rise and now stands at 97.01 percent,” Saxton said. “The tax shares of the top 1, 5, and 10 percent of taxpayers ranked by income are the highest in many years. The share of the bottom half of tax filers has fallen to a level of 2.99 percent. “In examining recent trends in the income share of the top 1 percent, what is most striking is its sharp rise during the 1990s. For example, between 1992 and 2000, the top 1 percent’s share of income jumped from 14.23 percent to 20.81 percent, an increase of nearly 7 percentage points, before slipping in 2001 and 2002. These data show that the most significant increases in this income share occurred in the 1990s, not in more recent years,” Saxton concluded.

Paul Krugman's column in the NYT today has some important criticisms of the bailout. I tried to copy and past but it won't post here when I do. Here's a link:

Where will the money come from?
Thats something that I was thinking about the other day as well. Of course higher taxes were the only conclusion that I could think about. Then I thought about this election and how candidates talk about improving the economy and such. But you don't really hear any of them talking about taxes "Read my lips" ![]() Or we can take the view point of the "All seeing eye" there. If the government didn't want it to happen, they would not have let it happen.

I'm afraid you're right. Last Thur if something wasn't done we were about two days from when most people would find out their credit cards were canceled.

Not when it devalues 35% in 6 years. But it doesn't matter for most people, they come for bullion during depressions as well. I almost feel bad for the masses who rely on the bankrupt FDIC or 401Ks with failing institutions.

Oil is shooting back up, IMHO thats a really bad sign. I bet gold went up today as well, but I havn't checked. The money is doing what it did before heading for oil to let the markets sort out.
Gas going back up is the last thing the economy needs, and I bet you will see it tomarrow at the pump. Funny how you see price increases right away, and it takes far longer to drop.

McCain and Obama were "trading barbs" today on the bailout plan. Why does this sound suspiciously like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic to me?
