If they can sell it in enough quantity, it would be profitable. If not, it could really suck money.

I don't recall the Merkur's being available with a diesel. I do remember them having some sort of turbo engine (the kind you just knew would break before it would reach 100k miles)

They weren't. My point is that that was an import that was gas and it failed. Diesel is even less liked.

Actually, the Scorpio had a 2.9L engine that other cars used and the XR4Ti had a 2.3L Turbo engine that was also used in the Mustang SVO, T-bird, etc, etc. It lasted over 100K for me which was amazing since I beat on it every day I could and I had hopped up that engine to the point that the weak C3 trans was breaking so I shoehorned in a built up C4.

I still think I would take my 33 mpg RWD 99 E300 over that 65 mpg FWD car unless they were selling it for less than $100 which is what I would pay for a FWD car with a transvestite engine.

That was a different time when fuel was cheap and no one cared about fuel efficiency. Today this kind of car would sell like hot cakes if the price was right. I think the main problem is Ford is in deep red and they don't have the resources to pull off even a promising idea like this one. I think Ford is going down, or maybe hoping for a govt bailout.

Even VW still builds its diesel engines in Europe. It seems that only the Europeans and Japanese know how to build a passenger car diesel engine.

We drive about 75 miles to my workplace and then it is about 15 more to hers. I drive the E300 to my workplace and she takes it to hers. She comes off work and drives it to me and I drive it home. This is because we are kinda far from home. If and when we move, she will drive the E300 and I will drive the Vette. The Excursion is for towing, dog hauling, cargo moving for a fee and newspaper delivery. In good weather, if we have to drive separate, I drive the Vette and she drives the E300. In bad weather, I drive the Ex.

The E300 is our workhorse till we move closer. When that happens, I'll drive the Excursion when it is bad weather.

Typical. American car companies will absolutely not be the first. This is why management IMO should bear the brunt of the responsibility in the Big 3's imminent demise. Get out at the front of the f****** line once in a while.

I loathe Ford with a passion, but I would be forced to consider this car if it were here and I were buying a new car.

If Honda or Toyota introduced it, they could pull it off with their good reputation. Ford, OTOH, cannot. They have no reputation to ride on. Just because you are the first doesn't guarantee that you will succeed. Honda, Toyota, etc, etc can absorb a loss a lot better than Ford can. It is easy for you to say "Get in front". It is much harder to say when you are way behind.

I wouldn't. Too small a car. Maybe it will come up with a key to wind up.
