Definitely put me down for one, Chad! Coffee and I are inseparable except when I'm in the TD, then it's often on my lap or down between the seat and console.

I've been tempted by some eBay ones before, I'm glad I held out.

If I ship you the center console from a W124, would you be willing to make a set up for me (and others)?

And I am serious. I have an extra center console, and would like to get something like this made.

Got a link? I vaguely remember something about an aluminum piece. Was it a cup holder?

Show me a pic of one first. Let me see if it's going to be more difficult than a w123. I'd have to make a template to be able to make multiples so I would like to see it first.

Those are cool.

Maybe I'm wrong, But I don't think glueing wood veneer to aluminum would last very long. I'll have to look into it but I think the wood will end up cracking since it will have a much different expansion rate.

well, you need to use a binding layer...you know a resin based one, etc. Ill leave that all up to you to figure out.

Are you going to laminate it truely one zebrano piece at a time...?

look at this tedious job

Wow ... that guy has a lot of extra time.

I was going to match the grain direction of the rest of the wood on the console, so I'll need to glue it on in 2 pieces since the sheets I bought have the grain running the wrong way to use a single sheet. Luckily the console is only 14" long and the sheets I have are 7.5" wide.

The only way I know of making a veneer work on a metal sheet of any kind, is to glue it to another piece of cheaper wood and attach it mechanically with pins or screws.

I see companies making wood veneered aluminum shelving etc. But they say they're using a special top secret process.

The only binding layers that I can think of that you might be referring to are those sheets used in thermoformed furniture and I'm not set up for that kind of operation.

I finished the cup holder console tray insert and I'm very happy with how it came out. I came up with a very close color match to the unfaded portions of the wood in both my w123's. I'll have to eventually refinish the wood around the shifter portion as that's the most faded.

It was a little more effort than I originally thought it would be, so if anyone else still wants one, I'm asking for $35 plus shipping. At that price it's covering my materials and still keeping it pretty cheap for forum members. If I sell these on Ebay I'll be asking $50 plus shipping.

It will also take a few weeks for me to make them due to the curing times for the MANY layers of varnish required to match the look of the wood in the car.

I decided against doing an additional cutout for a cell phone or iPod. The map pockets on the door or the glove box work fine for that stuff and too many holes were making the cup holder look over-done.

Let me know what you think and PM me if you want one.
