I have an ejector pump as part of my septic system, The hole there is to allow the water in the pipe up to the field to prevent freezing.
As it is not real deep, and in Chicago area can freze, and did once, before I put the hole in there.

Don't have one in the basement Ejector, but wonder if it might reduce the THUMP as the pump shuts off, and the water backs down to the check valve which is at floor level.

Well I wasn't trying to start an oil thread here...

I emailed the mfg and what they said is that the hole allows air to escape to allow the pump to "prime" and is only used when a check valve is also used. Basically, if the water level in the sump fell for some reason, such as evaporation if it was not used for a long time, or if there was a leak in the sump then the pump could act like a diving bell, where a pocket of air could be held in the pump causing the impeller to be dry and not work. This is because the air would be pushing against the check valve which was being held shut by a column of water above it. If there is no hole, but there is a "prime" in place, then it is good to go, provided the level never falls for the above mentioned reasons. So I am going to leave it as is unless I have to open it up some day then I will drill the hole. If anything, it seems a little quieter but I can't say for sure.
