Question do i have to get tags to title my car

I have a car here that i would like to sell. I had the owner of the car sign it over to me when i bought it (2 months ago) and never brought in the paperwork to the dmv. I would like to sell it now though since i am moving out of state. What is the easiest way to do this? Do i have to tag and title it before i can sell it? I would be lucky to get 1500 bucks for this car so i would like to spend as little money as possible.

Can i title it without getting tags?

You have to title the car, not tag it...unless you are wanting to allow someone to test drive the car...then get a temp tag for it!

Call or visit your local Motor Vehicle Agency.
Laws vary from state to state.
Where are you?

Google:
---your state name---motor vehicle laws

should get you the info you need.

Our NC titles have a second box on the back labeled "second reassignment by dealer". This is so dealers can be signed over a title then sign it over to another new owner without having to pay tax and title fees for every used vehicle they buy.

Your MD title may work the same way but, as was written above, check with your local DMV.

I got into an accident in my 300SD before I transferred the title and it got totaled. In order to get my money from the insurance, I had to get the previous owner to sign the title over to them. I didnt ever pay the taxes and fees to put it in my name. I just got lucky that I knew the previous owner.

I had the mother of my son's GF wanting to buy my Monte Carlo from me.

She had all but $250.00 of the asking price, and she wanted me to keep the car titled in my name 'til she came up with the rest of the cash...

Hummm? Tempting...but I wasn't that in a rush for the sale...

I told her to come up with $200.00, then she could have the keys...

She shows up a day later with the $250.00 and I sign the title over and remove the plates...I then take her over to the nearest Kwik-Trip and photo-copy the title to prove she's got ownership and not me...

Guess what?

I get a phone call from the DA's office asking why I didn't feel it was neccessary to pay two parking tickets on the Monte....

I ask, "When?" Of course, the dates are AFTER I sold the car...

I stop down at the DA's office the next day, show them MY PAPERWORK on the transaction...all is right with the world for me...

She never got the car titled and with the "LAF" sign stuck in the window (she should have gotten a ticket for that...in WI., "LAF" signs aren't legit' anymore...), they just copied the VIN from the dash and back-tracked to the "last owner" - which was me...

Fortunately, I had proof who did buy the vehicle and the DATED cash receipt from Kwik-Trip when I made the copy of the completed-title-transaction.

Time wasted on this venture? About 6 hours...but when you're in the spotlight for someone else's actions, it sure does pay to have done the paperwork and kept the proof of the transaction...

Titles.

I'm gonna Segway off MGBURGS advice:

In Georgia,if title is not transferred to the new owner, and the vehicle is in an "At Fault" accident
(and your [what YOU THINK is your]former vehicle is at fault)YOU can be sued in civil court for all damages.

Worst case example:
You sell your automobile to someone in California (Both parties are CA residents and the vehicle is titled in CA) ...Proud new owner neglects to transfer title
and drives car to Georgia ,where he "T-Bones" a DeKalb County School bus...
He's found to be at fault in DeKalb County traffic court.
School bus driver,Kiddies Parents(and maybe DeKalb County) name you in civil
suit.
You are Soooooo screwed. Not only do you have no defense...You have to fly
6000+ miles for a court appearance (At your own expense)with no lipstick involved.

If you didn't sign the title, you're ok. If you did sign it, you have to get a title in your name, but you don't have to tag it. Make sure you tell the DMV that you bought it as a parts car and have decided to sell it as is.

Just today my girlfriend called me and said she got a letter about an unpaid parking ticket for 165 dollars. It turns out that its for the volkswagen that she gave her dad when she got the ML. Her dad sold it to a kid who obviously didn't transfer the title. Guess what? Who's responsible for the ticket? My Girlfriend.

In Texas, and I don't know about other states, you don't have to register the car if you are going to sell it and not drive it. Once the previous owner has signed the title open, i.e., it can be transfered to anyone that has the title, you can pass that title along to the next guy. The easiest way to do this right is to ask at your local car registration place.
