Fall colors out in full force!

I was off work today and again tomorrow and I really lucked out on the weather. I took a few shots here, how are things where you all are?

Yes they are in full force, a week ago the leaves were green, now they are red and orange, perfect time to take a good Benz picture with those fall leaves...

Beautiful pics Evan. You have a really nice property and a great variety of color on your trees.

Mine all turn yellow or orange and drop fast ... except for the stubborn leaves on my pin oaks.

Not to many leaves left up here. Today reminded everyone that it was called "New England" for a reason. Very British weather today rain, clouds, rain, etc.

My sister lives fairly close to you KarTek, and I am jealous. Hope to spend Tday holiday in Cashiers and soak up some of the colors.

Nice photos! Yeah, we are at about peak now... maybe slightly past peak, but most leaves are still on the trees.

J-D, Hope T-day is a good one for you. Sometimes we really luck up here and it's a day like today - clear, calm, in the mid 70's.

Chad, looks like you have a lot of work ahead of you too! The only time I hate the trees is cleaning up after them. It takes a minimum of 5 weekends, spending about 3 hours each time to get them all.

I took a quick count and in the immedlate yard I have:

A couple varieties of Oaks - some deep red, some brown.
A couple varieties of Dogwood - yellow and red.
Maples - yellow and red.
Mountain Laurel - leaves gone already...
Redbud - yellow.

And, all the evergreens, the holley's, long leaf pine, short leaf pine, cedar, cyprus.

Yup, leaf cleanup is time consuming. I don't really mind it though since I use my riding mower to mulch and collect them. All the leaves help my compost heap grow too. The past few years I let the leaves fall longer between cleanups and was able to have more time for other things. None of my neighbors complained (which I thought they might), but every other weekend I spent about 3-4 hours and it worked out great. The first few years I lived here I was spending EVERY weekend working on leaf cleanup and it was a drag.

How are your holleys doing? I think this year is the best I've ever seen mine as far as berry volume. I have 2 - 15' rows of them about 30' tall and they're LOADED with berries. I can't wait for the flocks of birds that come every year to eat them.

Here's my favorite tree on our property ... the weeping cherry.

All over my f'n lawn!

I've got one oak that always hangs on past the town's Snuffleupagus pick up.

I seem to have a couple varieties of Holly. One, in the back grows several trunks, straight and tall, possibly 30' or so and has no berries that I have seen. The other variety in the front yard has a large central trunk with limbs growing straight out in rings every couple feet. These are loaded with berries but they're kind of orangish now. You're probably ahead of us here with somewhat cooler temps.

All the trees seem healthy with the exception of one cherry in the front that was attacked by termites and will probably have to be yanked out next year.

As far as leaves are concerned, we don't have any pick up. People are nuts and rake them into the ditch and set fire to them. Must be legal because it's been going on for years. Sometimes it's kind of dangerous because it casts a thick cloud of smoke across the street. Me, I just use the mower and the lawn sweeper and carry load after load to a dumping ground in the back woods.

It's one of the "entitlements" here. The proverbial $h!t would hit the fan amongst the elder population if they every dared cut the curbside vacuum pickup. I'm too lazy to bring everything to the front so I just haul everything to the woods in back. If we burned it here we'd probably have a DEP officer here with a fine in hand for polluting the air.

I've been accused of being a cheap ba$tard in the past. I do plan on getting one of those fancy, new-fangled mulcher-bagger machines here in the not-too-distant future, though. Right now it's the old rake into the blue tarp process.

Swamp Home Depot had one hell of a deal, on a self propelled mulch/bag mower, for $270! It was like a Toro or something.

Thats how we do our leaves, havn't had to rake in years.
