Rent.com?

Anybody here ever used Rent.com? I am thinking of renting an apartment and found one on CL for what seems to be a very low price. I contacted the lister who is in England. The apartment is in VA. The program requires my putting a deposit of one month's rent into rent.com's (escrow?) account where it will be held until I get the keys & rental contract from the owner. If I don't get them within a week rent.com refunds my deposit.

I'm not sure what to think of this arrangement. Anybody here know anything about this? Thanks.

Hmmm sounds fishy - get some references from people who have used it. Remember if it's to good to be true, it probably isn't. I din't know Ebay was into that line of business

Lots of time absent landlords have local property management companies collect rent checks and take care of problems like that which arise, in exchange for about 10% to 20% off the amount of the monthly rent.

But you need to find out, it is a very good question

......and, if you do take it, I would love to sublet it off of you for a week or so, next year, (if you want), cause I am hoping to drive out there in the SEC next year to visit you, Johnhef, mistress, powerpig, and the rest of
Mercedesshop DC area gang back there

I found a place that, upon reflection does seem almost too good to be true, . . . almost. My crap detector felt like it was tingling a little, so I will do more research.

I've used and abused the rent.com 100$ gift cards.

when you go to rent check rent.com and see if the property is listed on their list. if it is, then you are in! rent the place, no matter where you found it. then fill out the rent.com reward card form and tell them that you found it on rent.com.

they then send a form to your land lord, they will always say yes you told them you found it on rent.com, even if you didn't and in about a month after renting the place they sent you a visa card worth 100$.

I know it sounds fishy. but i use to apartment hop, renting a new place every 6 month, and i always got my 100$ card!

the last place i lived i never got my card, and i thought maybe i had used their system to much. but then on year later when i was leaving the apartment, they sent me a 100$ card.

Thanks--I missed this yesterday. I have landlord clients who use rent.com. This is from their website:

Rent.com does not handle lease transactions or money transfers. Do not do business with anyone who promises that Rent.com is handling any part of the actual lease transaction, including payment protection, apartment certification, escrow services or "satisfaction guarantees" of any kind.

They didn't actually use the term "escrow" but that's what it amounted to. My crap detector went off when I got that E Mail.

Thanks for your input. I'm old-fashioned. I kinda like doing business face-to-face. Of course, I also realize I'm somewhat of a dinosaur, too.
