Did I tell ya about the IMACs we bought. In a group of four, three had to go back for replacement HDs. One more than once! We buy a bunch of computers every year including MACs. The MAC guys don't even like to tell me about the failures anymore because I get after them about the failureas of their "better" machines. First Apple pitched their processors and went Intel. Then they pitched their operating system and went UNIX. So what is Apple about it anymore? The label and the pretty designer case/colors. Apple users rave about their machines and "forget" about the problems they have. They are no better than the PCs, they just have better marketing and owners who view them as religion.

Their software is better integrated than PC's. Unix is a far more stable OS than anything Microsoft has ever come up with. You can still run just about anything from the PC world on them but you also have the advantage of better multimedia and graphics capabilities inbuilt if that's your thing. I will be buying one as well when I can afford to.

Keep in mind with Apple products you are paying for their proprietary engineering and slick packaging. I rebuilt a water damaged Macbook, and the construction is different (as in compact and intricately designed), but not necessarily better.

If you're looking to go cheap then get an Acer notebook. The construction is okay at best but they work. The heat is a problem but if yout get a $20 pad and leave it there then it runs decently.

Alternately you can try tigerdirect.com and they have barebones systems for sale pretty much every day and set a system up yourself for a fraction of the price.

dell outlet man... get yourself a good deal on a scratch and dent model. I got my Inspiron 1525 for $800 shipped with the following

250 gig harddrive
3 gigs ram
premium case ( glossy with a stripe, its cool)
vista ultimate
9 cell battery ( totally worth it, 7 hours of internet surfing or a movie with life still left in it)
webcam with mic built in
DVD/CD-R
SD/MMC Pro slot
5 USB ports

and some other things.. oh, dual core processor and other small things that are awesome

as for the scratch, 5 minutes with a buffing wheel and compound and I was like.. I got a dell

plus I spec'd out this laptop on dell.com and it was like $1500 without tax or shipping

I got mine with tax, insured signature confirmed shipping for $799.99 exact with a warranty

IMHO the Mac thing is really overhyped. A good deal of the people that I have talked to that were going to jump ship were not doing it because it was hard to use. They were doing it because it was slow. Most peoples have poor user experiences with windows, as they come fully loaded with bloatware from the PC manufacturer. This is where Apple excels. Since you are buying direct from Apple, and not an outside manufacturer, there is no software preload that causes what I like to call bloat.

Not to mention the fact that you need those popups on your computer didn't get installed there by themselves, you probably had something to do with them installing.

IMHO - Mac products are cool, but by no means the best. For example, my MacBook has needed its logic board replaced, its keyboard, the screen, 2 batteries, and did I say its only a year old.... I have seen the inside of a Macbook, and while it looks cool, it has a really poor internal design...

Try tiger.com for rebuilt laptops. I bought a rebuilt Gateway laptop - 3 gig ram, 250 gig harddrive, dvd burner, webcamera, Windows Vista, etc. for $580 and no tax.

Try pcmagazine.com or pcworld.com for reviews.

I've been thinking about upgrading my PC. It's slow as hell and I only have about 2 gig of space left.

What I was thinking is to replace the motherboard and get a new 500 gig hard drive and use the hard drive I have now to boot and use the new one as a second drive.
Would that work?

You may well run into issues if you use an OEM version of Windows. I *think* you can change no more than two devices, or else Windows thinks it is being stolen. Those devices include the CPU, and Ethernet, Firewire, USB, SATA etc. controllers, and the video card.

Microsoft usually gives you a new number to activate windows -- they are pretty good about it, but you have to wait on the phone for a bit.

Otherwise, this should work OK.

If you are running a BSD or Linux, then no problem.

I'd also suggest you copy your present data over to your new drive and throw out the old one if it is three years old or more. Drives are dirt cheap these days, and every vendor has mirroring software available on their web site.

As far as Macs go, I've never really been that big of a fan. I like some things about them, but dislike others. I guess my biggest issue is that they're overpriced. The right PC can do anything a Mac can. This is coming from a Digital Media student.

The newest Mac operating system probably performs better than Vista though; (I'm still going to keep using Win XP for awhile myself).

Since we're talking about laptops...
The Asus Eee PC has been on my wishlist. Its screen dimension measures 8.9 inches. It'd be kinda cool to mount in a W123.

Maybe, but it is not really that important. I build a 3GHz Intel quad-core with 4GB memory (and a peppy video card) for my wife to run her business; she wanted Vista 64. It is blazingly fast. I build another one like it for a friend to run Linux and FreeBSD, and it might have been a bit snappier, but the difference was slight.

I'm a BSD guy myself, but I think that Vista has gotten a bad rap.

I'm determined to buy a Mac the next time I buy a computer. I know they're not the cheapest, but I believe they're well-made and have good components.
Yep, I buy a very good screen thats about it. The last screen before this currant one lasted damn hear 10 years. These LCD screens are not that durable so I can see myself replacing this one sooner. I just drop $500 or so on a tower every 4 years, that way it stays up to speed and reliable. Printers are cheap, keyboards are dirt cheap and I usualy ruin one a year, wireless mice are not cheap, don't want to hurt them!

I love my HP, I don't know anything about computers but it does what I want it to do and doesn't break.
