Well, at 40 I'm sure I could make it, with sufficient preparation and training. I've done the GC rim river rim in a day and climbed Mt Humphry's by Flagstaff which is 12633 feet. So I have some experience. Though I'm sure the increased altitude will have to be take into consideration for Whitney.

If at sea level you can maintain walking up a 3-5% grade at 50% HR, or around 25-30% VO2max, or maybe around 120-130bpm, then you should not have a problem at all.

At 14,000 feet your body needs 60-70% of VO2max to accomplish the same level, or roughly 75-80% of MHR. That's doable for at least a couple hours of walk/rest/walk/rest. No problem.

Happily Phoenix posesses some fairly steep local hikes that are good training grounds for this sort of thing. I shall endeavour to make use of them much over the next nine months or so.

[QUOTE=Kuan;2036587]. It's not a bad hike if you're fitter than a naturally aspirated V8.

In the late 70's I spent a week on the Long Trail in Vermont. It's a section of the Appalachian Trail. Lots of ups and downs, unlike hiking in Colorado which is typically all up one way and all down going back. Had a kid along. Had to pack in diapers and burn them in the campfire. Met a number of people heading north and planning to complete the whole AT. One guy had been told by his wife his choices were divorce, rehab or hike the AT. It looked like he was going to make it.

I have a 1000 mi. AT badge (not thru hiking). Started when I was 13 in Boy Scouts at Springer Mountain, but did most of it in one summer when I was 17. Would have finished if it weren't for the Grateful Dead

I am slowly introducing my oldest (5) daughter to tent-camping and if she shows an interest, may pick back up at Harper's Ferry in a few summers.

As keeper of useless information, I think you should know that the highest point in the lower 48 (Mt. Whitney - 14,505 feet) and the lowest point in the US (Badwater Basin - 282 ft below sea level) are both located in the same California county - Inyo, county. If you crest the Panamint range (west of Death Valley), you can see both places.
