Converting 8mm video tapes
Has anybody here ever converted 8mm video tapes to some other medium? I have a bunch of them, but have no way of playing them. The camera that was used to make them has long since died and I have only seen one 8mm video deck made by Sony. That was a long time ago and I don't know if it's even still made.
I would like to convert them to DVD or save them on to a hard drive for editing if I can. Any suggestions?

That was for converting 8mm mmovies. I'm looking for something to convert 8mm video tape to DVD. Sony has a product for that but it lacks the means to PLAY the tape. That's what I am missing. I guess the only solution is to buy an 8mm camera just to play these tapes.

Search craigslist and ebay for a used camera. I'd give you mine, but I still have to convert some movies with it.

I have the same problem. I plan on borrowing a friend's digital 8 camera (that still plays Hi8 and regular 8mm) and use the firewire to get them into our editing system. from there, I can edit them down and produce DVD's.

Sony has a cool-looking product called a DVDirect® MC5 Multi-Function DVD Recorder. You still need something to play the tapes into this, but it appears to run unattended to convert them.
Hopefully, by now there are a lot of unwanted 8mm camcorders lying around and for sale.
