I dunno, sometimes Cruise can do a good job of acting. Most of the time he's just on ... Cruise control.

The snipets in the trailer look way too clean for my taste. German or European productions usually work in more 'patina' to bring the 'period flavor' across.

It's also the only film I'm planning to see this holiday season. The indication is that it's been done well and is not "Hollywoodized". We can only hope. As for Cruise as Staffengberg. He does rather look that part. Hopefully he can act it too.

On an overlapping note, if you have not seen Spielberg's 'Munich' by now, I recommend to do so. The film regarded with plenty of criticism has been pull from the theaters very quickly, back then. "They", as I call them here, didn't like it. Personally I was reluctant and considered Spielberg's making of the movie just another collaborative act.

But, after a couple of years and premier view of the film in personal quaters on DVD, I came to the conclusion, the work is another great piece made by the acclaimed director. Spielberg is who he is, a master of his trade. Like him or not.

The movie, besides its entertainment value and (hopefully) granted authenticity, maybe also help, to determine a more detailed angle on the view of Israel and 'Jews', as mentioned in an other thread.

True. I have read that the designers actually tested them on "focus groups" before finalizing them. No substantiation on that though.

I just finished watching Winds of War, and War and Remembrance

War and Remembrance includes the story of von Stauffenberg.

I really like the Winds of War, and War and Remembrance because it doesn't have any of the "patina" of the old days. pretty much shows it how it was, cinematically i mean. The series was filmed in the 80s in easter block countries who has seen no major changes to the cityscapes since the 40s. and the Auschwitz scenes were filmed in Auschwitz.

I'm really looking forward to Valkyrie, but I hope they do it well.
War and Remembrance does a wonderful job of explaining the plot, and Rommel's involvement.. or lack their of, and his subsequent death. It will be sad if Hollywood couldn't tell the story as well as a Mini-Series form the 1980s.
