I'm not sure what that means. We have a LAN with about 23TB from which I download imagery and data. I also pull data from a couple of remote sites.

My workstation is RAID4 with a bit over 1 TB. The OS and applications are on a separate internal 73 gig high bit rate drive.

Do other people access data and files that are on your computer?

I think I found some specs for the software you use....

I came up with Pentium 3, 900mhz....

I'm alone on this workstation, though anybody can logon that can push me outta my chair. I think I understand what you you're getting at: My computer and drives do not serve data to others, though I can grant permission for remote data access over the LAN (and often do).

Virtualization on a hackable intel platform doesn't sound like a good business plan.

We currently have four imacs here in the office, the two newest are aluminum, core 2 duo, 2.6 GHz with 4GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. I have, most unfortunately, had to support a PITA of a windows PC for years to access windows only government software. Have tried various virtual windows programs over the years with less than stellar results; until now! A few weeks ago I picked up Fusion2 by VMware and so far it operates flawlessly.

It appears as though for less than $100 in software I have eliminated not only the grief of dealing with a windows pc, but a grand or so a year in IT support.

Long live Steve Jobs and a curse on Microsoft (as if they could be more accursed than they already are!).

I have no experience with parallels but reviews seem to be mixed.

From what it sounds like, you need the extra oomph. Dual quad cores, and alot of memory will cost you like 5-6k over on the apple side.

Sounds like you share some data over the network, but you don't host a huge file share (like the 29+ TB array you got.)

Read some posts somewhere where Bot was described as an engineer.

OOps, not an engineer.

I do biogeography. It's a sort of hybrid between physical geography and ecology. You deal with endless databases and huge image files. Lot's of "if-then-else" type searches just to get data in a useful collection then there are these humungous analysis packages: We use SAS (http://www.sas.com/) and Fragstats (http://www.umass.edu/landeco/research/fragstats/fragstats.html) pretty heavily.

My younger brother is the engineer. He uses a package sort of like Autocad on the graphics & database side but with comprehensive modeling called, "ProEngineer" (IIRC). He started out in AutoCad but finds ProEngineer much more capable on the analytic side, which is where he spends a lot of time. I don't understand his stuff so I have to leave it there.

well i have over the past few days tried all 3, boot camp, vmware fusion and paralells. i think of all 3 boot camp is best, to have xp running inside of mac os it is relatively confusing, so what looks good in theory or in the online demo video does not always work as well in practice., i was using macbook pro with 2.0ghz and 2gig memory. as for performance it seemed good., when i installed them on my black macbook, it was slowed way down

VMWare Fusion works perfect on my Black Macbook. Doesnt slow down, or anything.

I do however want to get the new Aluminum Macbook. They look cool.

what model is your black unit? i bought the black one last week, but found that the screen is too small for me, so a few days later i bought the macbookpro. my black unit is 2.0ghz with 1 gig memory. have you seen how the newest units are built? i saw the video at best buy, apparently the case is machined from a solid piece of aluminum
