Is this a racist comment?
 

As some of you may know I am an older man married with kids who is back at College working on my degree. Today before the lecture there was a boy and his girlfriend sitting infront of me who where eating chips. He left and came back before lecture started and he ask his girlfriend if there where any chips left. She said I finished them off. He says" Damn honey those dissapeared faster then rims at a PDiddy concert" There was this young black man who was sitting a row ahead of them and he turns around and starts yelling and calling him a racist for saying that. He said "Why a PDiddy concert? Why not Fallout boy.Is it becasue Black people go to that concert?"

Sorry, but as far as I'm concerned racism is now officially no longer a primary issue. We have a black president.

I think that Black Americans are not racist as a whole, but there is some that are. Just like white people, I don't think white people are racist as a whole. There are racist on both sides. :)

I agree it is funny. I personally wouldnt go saying it in public or expecially a College lecture hall.

Personally, I don't think it was particularly racist until the kid who responded turned it into a race issue. The joke insinuated that folks who attend a PDiddy concert may be the type to steal rims. It didn't say black people steal rims. I don't think it's any different than making a joke about pot at a Grateful Dead concert ... I don't think that would suggest that all white people are potheads, even though most people at Dead concerts are, in fact, white. Most of the friends/aquaintences I have who are black I think would have laughed at the PDiddy joke because they aren't the type of person described in the joke, and anyone who's met them would know that. Then again, I don't know the context of the situation you witnessed ... it could be that the kid who made the joke has a reputation of making racist statements and/or is a general jerk, and the kid who got offended had heard previous offensive comments. I.e., there could have been background that made it more offensive than it was on its own.

One of the many rules of comedy . . . know your audience.

Wasn't funny at all. It doesn't even make sense unless you inject a racial stereotype into it. So the black kid, although he over reacted responding to an idiot, had a point.

As for the contention that somehow because we have a black president all racism has ceased is preposterous. Last I checked the hate groups in America and all their secret members didn't disband once Obama got elected. In fact his election has probably help increase membership.

Why does racism get so much traction? After all, think about it. What is racism? A small subset of discrimination. In discrimination, we have age, sex, weight, religion, clothes, education, etc, etc. Why is it my looking down on fat people, ugly people, white trash people, etc, etc seem more benign than me looking down on you because you are black, asian, mexican, etc, etc? What's the difference? Isn't discrimination discrimination? If I look down on you because you are poor or driving a beater car, etc, etc, how is that better than me looking down on black people, white people, green people, etc, etc?

Jokes are especially funny when there's a slant of truth in them...and that's why the black guy got offended...as long as the issue is kept within the black culture (like the use of the "N" word), it's alright, but if someone outside of the circle makes light of it, then it's offensive!

Agreed ... obviously there's a line, and I guess it's different for everybody. But as a woman, I certainly here plenty of jokes that could "offend" me, but most of the time they make me laugh. There is a huge difference between someone actually discriminating against me because I'm a woman, and someone making a joke about shoes, or crying, or bad driving. I make those jokes myself. I don't take offense at that because I don't consider myself among the stereotype targeting in those jokes ... and anytime I find myself acting like a stereotype, I am able to laugh at myself for it and admit it.

Funny "sexist" incident recently ... I was in Barnes and Noble and picked up an MB Classic magazine off the shelf and starting flipping through it. This man was standing next to me looking at another car mag. As soon as I started looking through my magazine, he absolutely froze, and stared at me as though I'd just whipped out a crackpipe or something. After a long pause, he goes, "A girl? Looking at CAR magazines?", then shakes his head and walks off .... as though is entire universe had just been turned on end. I guess I could have been offended, but instead I just couldn't stop laughing about it the rest of the night.

I guess it all depends on your perspective and what you've been through, or what you've been taught to be offended by. I've never faced terrible discrimination for my gender and was raised to have a sense of humor about the various shortcomings (and blessings) or all types of people, within limits. I wouldn't make fun of mentally handicapped people in front of my sister, who is educably mentally retarded (and knows it), but I never got offended if someone called someone else "retard" when clearly there's no one actually retarded in sight.

I could not agree less on the "kept within the black culture (like the use of the "N" word)". If a black can call a black the "n" word, then everyone ought to be able to do so. The opposite is also true- if "you " use it then "we" should be able to also. If you want everyone to be equal, then the lines of distinction need to be erased- meaning you have to act as if they don't exist. You cannot say "we black people, or we white people" without excluding some other group. When you exclude you invite discrimination.

In terms of social equality: It's not a level playing field. It never was. It never will be. Not meaning necessarily in a racist sense. There are plenty of inequalities to choose from and most of them have incongruities that result in humor as well as offense. This is why we teach our children common courtesy.

If I had said that and somebody got offended I would say, "Im sorry if you were offended, it was meant for private conversation." Then let it drop. And I would truly be sorry that I offended the guy. I wouldn't do so intentionally out of the blue.

IMO, humor is best when it isn't personally offensive. But the really best humor skirts right along the edge! If you're going for the gold you gotta expect bruises.

Ha Ha. Thats funny. To be honest If was young again and had Mercedes when young I would of introduced myself right there on the spot. The only thing was when I was young Mercedes where not common at all for people under 30.

I did introduce myself, and we are still friends.



She laughed at me when I introduced myself (being a Mercedes person), but she likes my wagon.

FWIW, I was once in line at a grocery store in Seattle and one of the checkers was saying something to another one about a woman and ended derisively with, "yeah, well she was blonde."

I agree with all of this. It's when a "group" distances itself and differentiates itself it automatically says to anyone NOT included in the group "we are different". That group now cannot complain that is being treated differently (in a negative OR positive way) since they themselves made the distinction of being different.
