Great in the snow.

It'll need a timing belt change by 90k miles. An expensive car to own, on par with Mercedes.

I have been doing alot of research on these cars as I have been lusting after them for over a year. When/if my Subaru dies and my school loan is paid off, I am buying one.

Be careful of the front control arms. There was an issue with them on these cars. Also, like someone else said, ask about the timing belts. SOP is to replace the timing belts and water pump at the same time. Average is $1500 service.

The entire chassis on the A8 are made of aluminum. Never heard anything bad about the Quattro system. The A8 and S8 both have the aluminum 4.2L V8. The early A8 had about 310HP and the S8 were a little more sporty with a lowered suspension and same motor but tuned to 360HP.

Hi,
Could the tire wear which is wearing on the inside drivers side front tire be caused by control arms.Is the aluminum bad.

The control arms are what causes this odd tire wear. Easier to do the arms than replace the bushings; you'll get new ball joints in addition to just bushings if you replace whole arms. They're aluminium. You can handle this yourself, no spring compressor or other special tools beyond 13, 16, 18 mm wrenches, jack, and stands. Do all four upper arms, they should cost about $75 each. I think of this as a 75k maintenance item on Audis.

With the mileage it should be around $10k, give or take. I was just looking at a beautiful '01 with 120k. It just had the control arms replaced and new tires and brake work. He wanted under $9k.

Control arms and pinion have been bane of Audis since the 4000 series, surprisingly nothing seems to have changed. I thought they would learn from the past.

You can buy Audi parts via this website. Just select "Buy Parts" from the home page.

You can select "Audi" instead of Mercedes.

I have a customer with a silver on black one with only 28,000 miles. Quite literally the "Little Old Lady from Dallas." The only drawback with A8's is only a handful of body shops around the country are certified for any chassis welding should you be involved in more than a fender-bender. I like the 2004-up body style better and they're going at bargain prices right now. If I had the $$$$, we just sold a 2008 S8 with 1800 miles for $85,900. The first owner paid $115,000 in July. They traded it in for another daughter's 2009 A4 cuz the seats were too snug for mommy's behind...

A8 seats weren't wide enough for mom's behind?

That's what bench seats are for.
