So what are you saying? That it OK as long as you like the results?

As to whether the US would be a global power today or not if this or that had happened, that is really hard to say. Once you undo one event, what the results may be is very unpredictable. That is like saying that if we went back in time and ensured that Hitler had an accident as a child and died, we would not have had WWII and life would be good. Well, yes, well no. What if the person that came along was worse?

To a point. Sometimes too much is too much. When a woman has too much, the sag and yeast often develops between the skin folds between the breast and the body. Rub a little dough, throw it in the oven and Viola. Bread.

No, I am just saying the constitution did not contemplate what to do if some states decided to defect.

Which is why many colonies (and later, territories), wrote into their entrance comments (not unlike what we now call a "presidential signing statement") a caution that they could pull out of the union. Also, a large number of states had written that into their constitutions.

Lincoln proved what Jackson had asserted and demonstrated on a limited scale, that a constitutional court system is merely a convenience when the president has an army.

I was wondering why you were glad he did things not authorized by the constitution. Would you be as generous to any other President, including the current one?

I think Lincoln found himself in a situation that he felt required his action and decided to act because he felt preservation of the union was the most important thing.

In fact he said as much in speeches at the time.

In the beginning he was failry cautious in his approach to limiting slavery to the existing states. I feel he eventually was compelled by the way events evolved to take more comprehensive action.

I don't think that Bush did anything he THOUGHT would tank the country. With that assumption, he did some things that were not exactly kosher but what he felt was necessary for the welfare of the country. Would you also give him a pass on that principle? This is assuming that he didn't do something that he thought was bad but for personal gain.

I'm sure that Bush also thought along those lines. So far, the only difference is that you like the results of what Lincoln did but don't like the results of what Bush did. If you can give a pass to one President, why not the other?
