If people would stop sending their money to Washington they would stop. My perception of the level of corruption and incompetience throughout gov't and the financial institution is shocking and to tell you the truth I hate to keep sending my hard earned dollars up there.

Keep in mind that the south was only trying to do what had successfully been done when we quit sending money to England. It seems like it was only yesterday.

Exactly. The good news is that the political climate is getting to point where people won't be ashamed to admit it.

I'm sure that Bush also thought along those lines. So far, the only difference is that you like the results of what Lincoln did but don't like the results of what Bush did. If you can give a pass to one President, why not the other?

here I though we were discussing Lincoln.

I knew Abe Lincoln, son, and George W is no Abe Lincoln!

I do know that Lincoln was pretty good at gathering facts and pondering things and anguishing over them. If W anguished over anything he kept it well concealed.

Wow! You knew Abe? You're highly proficient with a computer for someone your age!

Pale moon shining on the fields below
darkies are crooning songs soft and low
Needn't tell me so because I know
It's sleepy time down south
Soft winds blowing through the pinewood trees
Folks down there like a life of ease
When old mammy falls upon her knees
It's sleepy time down south
Steamboats on the river a coming or a going
Splashing the night away
Hear those banjos ringing, the people are singing
They dance til the break of day, hey
Dear old southland with his dreamy songs
Takes me back there where I belong
How I'd love to be in my mammy's arms
When it's sleepy time way down south
Dear old southland with his dreamy songs
Take me back there where I belong
How I'd love to be in my mammy's arms
When it's sleepy time down south
Sleepy time down south

The nation needs balance. the best quote i've heard on this matter is

"The North saved the union in the 19th century the Ideas of the South will save the union in the 21st century." - Dennis Prager

As the government gets more big, and all powerfull, and corrupt, and well evil...maybe the Confederates were right! With enough military power a few states can legaly say were out of the contract.

I know an old Southerner who fly's a 3X5 Stars and Bars off his boat to this day.

I have to agree with them on a lot of points.

Rebal. Is that a word?

If you meant Rebel Yell, maybe I will nominate Billy Idol.

Saw him in concert in the mid 80s.

Whether Lincoln did, or did not ponder this or that decision is as immaterial as to whether or not Dubyuh or any other president did or didn't. It wouldn't matter if they used a Ouija board and owl intestines. They were legally elected president. In each case the presidents did what they believed was best for the country. In both cases a significant proportion of the electorate came to lose confidence in their governance. In one case the dissenters were deprived of due process and had their property seized without compensation. In the other case they made cute movies.

It matters little how who did what. You said that you were glad that Lincoln did many things that the constitution didn't directly authorize and it turned out well. My point is that Bush did the same things but it didn't turn out well. So why do you give Lincoln a pass? Seems like you do give him a pass because you like the results. IOW, "The Ends Justify The Means".

Lincoln's little thing turned-out well? 600,000 American soldiers killed. Bush is a small-time competitor with his butcher's bill of a measly 4 or 5 thousand.

Sounds like Bush has a lot of catching up to do before he leaves office.

New York City Secession
Civil War Era

Fernando Wood: When Disunion has become a fixed and certain fact, why may not New York disrupt the bands which bind her to a venal and corrupt master... ?In the period of national crisis immediately preceding the American Civil War, Democratic Mayor Fernando Wood, widely considered the most corrupt in the city's history, proposed the secession of the city as a sovereign city-state to be called the Free City of Tri-Insula (Tri-Insula meaning "three islands" in Latin), and incorporating Manhattan, Long Island and Staten Island. In an address to the city's Common Council on January 6, 1861, Mayor Wood expressed a Copperhead sympathy with the threatened seceding states and a desire to maintain profitable cotton shipping, confidence that the city-state would prosper on the import tariffs that then supplied 2/3 of the Federal revenues, and especially dissatisafaction with the state government at Albany. But the idea of leaving the United States proved too radical even in the turmoil of 1861 and was poorly received, especially after the Southern bombardment of Fort Sumter starting on April 12. The war, and especially conscription, was nevertheless often unpopular in the city, sparking the deadly New York Draft Riots.
