If it is how do you get around it?

I bought a new cartridge and it worked fine.

Yep, that chip needs to be reset and when you go to professional refillers like http://www.cartridgeworldusa.com/

They do that for you and their ink is the same formulation as the OEM.

I use epson printers at work and they are great. Quality is good and they print fairly fast as well. I've used them soley for the last 8 years at work.

Epson and Canon have great basic printers. I think consumables on these devices can start to get expensive, whether laser or ink jet.

I've had a couple of Minolta color lasers. They've had minor mechanical problems (paper feed) but produce exceptional quality for my required tasks. Refill OE cartridges are around $80 each.

I've got an HP932C at home on a wireless print server...it's kind of a toy, but we've gotten a lot of use from it and the quality is decent for what the kids need to do. I'm about to replace it with the EPSON WF600. That looks like a real nice wireless printer.
