Backhoe Question
I'm working on a Cat 416 backhoe and i have to do the brakes. Does anyone know a good place for aftermarket backhoe parts? I did the brakes on this thing a couple of years ago and the parts from catterpillar were really expensive. BTW the brakes are the wet type and inside the rear axle. The axle is made by Ford so I figure there must be an alternative to puchasing from the stealership!

Why does it need brakes again after only two years?

That would be my question; my 25 year old sweet alice has 5000 hours on the original wet brakes, just put brakes on our 46 yo oliver backhoe five years ago.

Glad you asked that. I'll post some pics of the brake parts and maybe you can give me some advice. The brakes on this thing wouldnt do anything (had to drop the bucket to get it to stop. Didnt seem to be anymore adjustment left in the system. This thing gets used in a commercial application and quiet often gets driven with the park brake on.

I'd be willing to bet that 1) an operator runs with their foot on the brake(s) or 2) the brakes weren't adjusted properly (or possibly mis-assembled) from the outset and wore prematurely.

My uncles John Deere 310 is a 1992 and has about 1,800 hours on it. The rear brakes are original. I *think* the parking brake is seperate from the regular brakes as well.
I suspect the operator is beating the piss out of it, or something is way out of adjustment.

Went to Cat yesterday and bought the frictions and steels for the brakes plus two 5 gallon pails of oil. $800
![]() The Service brakes and park brakes are the same. Just linkage operated. Got the axle back together and in the Hoe last night. After talking to the other mechanic it turns out some of the operators wont put the tractor in low gear when coming off the mountain so they are forced to ride the brakes for several miles in steep terrain. I forgot to take my camera to work yesterday. I'll post some pics tomorrow. These guys can tear up anything. We have two 7.3L powerstroke diesels that are ****ed because they drove with the airfilter boot disconnected and ingested massive amounts of dust. In one of these engines you can rock the pistons in the bore and hear them click as they hit the other side of the bore. |
