Well we made it out alive but didn't find any drugs or money. We stayed in Casa Grande and visited Paqime. The site and museum are very impressive, all the more interesting because my friend Chris is an expert in Pre-Columbian American history and archaeology. We aren't driving a Mercedes. Perhaps this means Brian will have to delete this thread. My friend who planned the trip has a 95 Volvo 850. We're driving it.
We stayed in Martha's Bed and Breakfast in Columbus before crossing the border. Her husband Javier was a Mexican drug interdiction officer as well as bodyguard to Mexico's Attorney General and terrorism liason with Ecuador, protecting the oil pipelines. He had lots of interesting tales. His grandfather died fighting with Villa, his great uncles were military officers with Villa.
He walked in at breakfast and took off his coat, revealing a pistol on his hip. Martha interjected that he had been out for a walk and there were dogs in the neighborhood. After a long conversation about his life and experiences, he told us the only dogs he was keeping at bay with the pistol were of the 2-legged variety.
We stayed in the Guacamaya(sp?) bed and breakfast in Cas Grande. It's just across the road from Paqime and run by a very interesting woman who built the place herself. I think she and Mistress would get along. She prefers hanging out with guys.
Mexico was fine. It was quite easy for us since Chris can manage his way with Spanish. The process for filling out the border paperwork is not clearly marked so talk to someone before you cross over so you know what to do. You need a tourist visa for each person and a permit for the car. Individual visas are free for up to 7 days.
Also, if you drive thru Columbus, stop at the Historical Museum to meet Lee, museum host, insufferable talker, and Minuteman.
