I'm a wimp ... almost everything t-bills. So I did actually make gains, just not very much. My 19 shares of Bank of America are down a lot, but it wasn't like that was much to begin with. My 401k I just started a year ago so there wasn't much to lose ... haven't looked at the year-end statement but it probably lost a decent amount. With company matching I still come out ahead as opposed to not investing in it, though. I stayed mostly flat this year ... but I guess compared to what's happened to a lot of people, that's worth celebrating.

I wouldn't say thats wimpy...one of my uncle has all his money in bonds, after this year he isn't doing so bad.

I bet a lot of people wished they owned bonds this year.

Yeah, for once my pessimism paid off. That said, I do feel like now, or the next couple months, may be a great time to get in on some bargain-basement stocks. Would have to take a little risk ... but the money's still out there.

My 401K is in a Principal Financial Group Target Retirement mutual fund. Last year the fund kept about 73% of the fund in stocks and 27% in bonds and cash. The total return last year was minus 37%

My Rollover IRA and Roth IRA's are with Vanguard, and both IRA's are in one of Vanguard's Target Retirement funds. The fund was down 33% last year.

Which proves another point I'm always making about the benefits of index funds relative to actively managed funds.

Both Target Retirement funds have similar asset allocations, but Vanguard's fund outperformed Principal's by 4%. Vanguard's Target Retirement fund is invested mainly in index funds, and Principal's is invested mainly in their actively managed funds.

I finally put in the papers to roll the one from my old job into the new plan. I haven't checked it in over two years. This could be interesting.
Are you 100% vested in the company match money? I not only lost a good chunck from the market, but lost the match (50% of deferred income, no company limit 'cept the fed max.) when the lay-offs came...
