Anybody Read Their End-of-Year Mutual Fund Statements?

That's all. Just wanted to see where this thread might go.

I have not.

My liver is precarious enough as it is.

I have a small stock based thingie left over from my brief dabbling in the stock market about ten years ago.

My total value a year ago was 127, this year its about 67. about a 40% drop. I am glad I don't have a lot there.

Even my dreary real estate values are doing better than that (I hope).

Quote:
What Does Mutual Fund Mean?
An investment vehicle that is made up of a pool of funds collected from many investors for the purpose of investing in securities such as stocks, bonds, money market instruments and similar assets. Mutual funds are operated by money mangers, who invest the fund's capital and attempt to produce capital gains and income for the fund's investors. A mutual fund's portfolio is structured and maintained to match the investment objectives stated in its prospectus.
Well there's your problem right there.

I checked the one at my "new" job. It's actually making a little money. The real nice part is the 100% employer matching up to 4% of income. If you look at it that way, I make 100% on each weeks contribution before I even worry about the investment aspect of it.

I finally put in the papers to roll the one from my old job into the new plan. I haven't checked it in over two years. This could be interesting.

Most of the people who read their statements have committed suicide. That's why mine is in a drawer. My retirement plan: work until dead.

Are you 100% vested in the company match money? I not only lost a good chunck from the market, but lost the match (50% of deferred income, no company limit 'cept the fed max.) when the lay-offs came...

My wife monitors them; just tonight I told her to write the date on the outside of the sealed envelope and file it away just like that.

YTD the following:

401K down exactly 50%
2 x 529 (massachusetts) down 40%
Gift trust for college educ. down 46%

The only thing I can think to do I will; that is to pay off my mortgage this year, then never, ever, borrow again. From now on I will manage my retirement account myself. I'll take the tax hit initially, then decide where to put the money. That way, when I lose money, it will be my own fault, not someone else's.

I hate whiskey, make mine a beer!!!
