Anyone have any experience with used Porshe's?

I used to have a 924 once upon a time and even though it wasn't a 911, it was a nice looking handling car.

Had a 911 for about2 weeks and loved it. I used to buy and sell cars at the time, FWIW.

Now I have to itch to buy something sporty again.

I notice that boxsters are relatively inexpensive. You can get 2002 for about 23k.

Porshe forums state that they are more refined and smoother riding than other models, although a lotof guys wish they had a little more balls.

Just like anything else, there are pro's and con's but I was wondering if any of my MSHOP pals have any first hand knowledge.

I'm tall and used to fit in a 911 just fine but I am curious about the boxster.

Maybe I'll go check out one today.

Here's a good internet resource:
http://www.986faq.com/default.asp

As you've seen, they can be found for under $20k. Imho, I'd rather buy a mid-1980's 911 targa for that amount. Plenty of good examples around...

I love the Boxsters and had the pleasure of driving one when they first came out.

I was working on a project at the time for my company's parent corporation, working with companies that make trade show exhibits.

I had narrowed my search down to proposals from three companies.

One of the companies had a sales rep who was a lady in her middle thirties who had just bought a brand new boxster.

We went out to lunch, and she threw here keys to me and told me to drive it.

Naturally, she got the job.

True story.

Go with the Boxster if you want a convertible, otherwise not. I would buy an early Boxster for cheap and have the motor beefed up. There was a supercharger kit for it that was only $5k, will create some sensation of power....

Great handlers, refined, no balls from the factory.

Cynics call it a modern 914.

I have a 914 but I have a Chevy 327 in it. BIG BALLS.

I will definitely check them out. There seem to be more of them available than the others.

I wonder if I will fit in it at 6'3".

Funny how I fit in a honda civic better than a mustang.

If I get one, I will look into an extended warranty for sure.

Are you looking specifically at the Boxster, or all the cars in its class? performance-wise, the S2000 outdoes it in every way on the autocross course. If you are into the Boxster, I would also recommend some engine enhancement and some top notch rubber.

You may find a boxter uncomfortable if you are 6'3". The 1989 951 Turbo S and 968 6-Speeds are plenty big inside,,, a riot to drive and give decent economy.

I believe the 89 951 Turbo S had pretty much identical performance to the Honda NSX from the same era,, and with MAF and a stage 2 chip, can be made stupid fast.

I gotta go check it out to see if I fit comfortably.

The 911 I had was big enough as was the 944.

Thanks

A S2000 is terrible unless you are on a track and can keep your foot planted. It is anemic below 8000RPM. Below 8000 it drives like a Miata. Not streetable. Any other car in the class would be better.

Boxters are like mopeds. Fun to drive around until someone sees you driving one.

Go for an older 911.

Boxster=I bought this cause I couldn't afford a 911.

You want to eat 911's for lunch? Get a 928. My favorite Porsche. 5.4 32V V8...awesome.

I'll admit to being more of an American muscle car fan because of their primitive nature, but I've always had a thing for the 928's.
