See, I think in terms of 2 classes when my country is at war. Those who are with us and I hope to protect from damage, ... and everybody else.

So you make no distinction between those who have declared war on us and those who wish to remain neutral and not get involved? That's an unfortunately narrow world view.

Distinction? Don't kill people who leave us alone. People who get onboard we make allowances for in their interest. The rest are enemies or enemy sympathizers. Kill'em if they're a threat. Make no allowances for those who are not a threat.

Whats the problem???......Either they are for us...or against us..It's a black & White issue... There is NO room for a grey area on this subject...

I don't know who is setting the standards. Doesn't exactly sound like the 'Great American Spirit', but it sure rings familiar to something we usually regard with a much distaste.

Do you think there is a difference between enemy combatants and enemy sympathizers? Is there a difference between those who talk tough and those who pick up weapons? Is there a difference between those who don't like us and those who hate us? Is there a difference between those who hate everything about us and those who hate a few things we do?

Do you think we should know our enemies? Or is everyone who doesn't cheer us on, sport Power of Pride bumper stickers, and wear american flag shirts all to be seen and dealt with the same way?

Knowing one's enemy is always a good thing: It allows one to more effectively deal death and destruction on the head of one's enemy, until they either surrender or die.

If they surrender then treat them with courtesy and magnanimity.

By your proposal, we had no business killing any Iraqis, since they were "leaving us alone". Ditto for Vietnam and countless other misadventures the US got involved in.

The people who planned the Sept. 11th attacks left us alone right up until they executed the plan.

If knowing one's enemy is always a good thing, wouldn't defining them be good too? Surely there are more colors in the world than black and white.
