Last I heard, we were the most obese country and not by 1 or 2 percentage points. Quite a few, IIRC. We lead a much more unhealthy lifestyle so you are starting with a poorer group of candidates. What did you expect? That you could play against a marked deck and come out ahead?

All of a piece with his carefully crafted cult of personality.

He did a masterful job of mollifying the masses by charting a nebulous course amongst yet unnavigable shoals.

That information is available to you. However, which is easier? Pop a pill or watch what you eat? That is the route the patient will more than likely take. So what do you do?

For many, even for well qualified educated people, those are the only jobs being created or avaialable.

Consider yourself one of the luckey few in the manufacturing sector. Perhaps someday in the future, when the R&D phase is completed, your job will also be outsourced to a cheaper manufacturing labor market.

Maybe, maybe not. But how is your wanting a family having anything to do with what is out there? Nobody is forcing you to have kids you cannot afford.

Fair enough. It's gonna take several years, if not terms for those actions to show results. If you expect next month, then he's doomed to disappoint you.

The last Democratic administration balanced the federal budget. What does the last Republican administration have to show for their 8 years in power? If you want talk excesses and financial irresponsibility, lets examine the last 8 years that Obama inherited.

How? By submitting a "wish list" to congress and have congress submit to them back what they will or will not do? By using accounting tricks with pools of cash all over to play shell games?

Why don't YOU explain to me how the budget is written?

Either way, as long as he isn't in the shower stall next to you and grabbing you, what do you care?

What you could afford yesterday, doesn't mean you'll be able to afford it tomorrow.

Economic situations can change overnight through no fault of your own. If you haven't experienced that situation, then you'll never know or understand the consequences.

I used to think Canada had a pretty good health care system, but if the flaws exceed the drawbacks well, maybe I was misinformed.

What other type of course would you chart amongst unnavigable shores? I'm happy that we've got someone who I believe will be pragmatic, thoughtful, and willing to adjust strategy and tactics as the fog obscuring the shoals begins to lift.

Furthermore, a speech such as last night's isn't the place for wonkish detail. It is exactly the place for broad-brush "big picture" presentation. The details will come, the details will be debated, the details will change and evolve -- as they should.

Agreed. That is why planning is essential. However, sometimes, plans can go awry.

Nor mine. So why should I be responsible for it? It is still your problem, is it not.

I'm afraid I haven't. I had to climb up from very little. Actually, from a negative position.

Yes, you are correct. I don't want to expand this discussion too much, but I have to say that in my opinion the problems of unhealthy lifestyles and pill-pushing doctors are related. I believe that they are largely the result of the rise of influence of corporations in today's society. Consumers are bombarded with carefully crafted (almost Orwellian) advertisements for basically unhealthy foods and medications. Restaurant portions and supermarket packaging encourages extreme overconsumption. Corporatized food supply emphasizes shelf life, transportability, and profit over consumer and environmental health. Life has gotten complicated. Most folks are working hard (if they're working!) We're all pressed for time, rushing here and there. Stressed. It is difficult to find the time to educate oneself and filter out the marketing BS and make healthy choices. Clearly that is what one must do, and it is clearly the individual's responsibility to do so. But there is a substantial role for effective regulation and oversight as well, and it seems to me that effective regulation and oversight has lagged behind corporate influence over our lives in recent years. And I am not suggesting that it is a republican or democratic problem, or a liberal or conservative problem. But it is a problem.
