For 2009 and 2010, the Making Work Pay provision of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will provide a refundable tax credit of up to $400 for working individuals and $800 for married taxpayers filing joint returns.

This tax credit will be calculated at a rate of 6.2% of earned income and will phase out for taxpayers with adjusted gross income in excess of $75,000, or $150,000 for married couples filing jointly.

For people who receive a paycheck and are subject to withholding, the credit will typically be handled by their employers through automated withholding changes in early spring. These changes may result in an increase in take-home pay. The amount of the credit must be reported on the employee's 2009 income tax return filed in 2010. Taxpayers who do not have taxes withheld by an employer during the year can also claim the credit on their 2009 tax return.

It is not necessary to submit a Form W-4 to get the automatic withholding change. However, an employee with multiple jobs or married couples whose combined incomes place them in a higher tax bracket may elect to submit a revised W-4 to ensure enough withholding is held to cover the tax for his or her combined income. Publication 919 provides additional guidance for tax withholding.

Taste-wise yes, unfortunately a good portion of the alcohol gets filtered out on it's way through.

Same here - little bits sum to large numbers. $13 a week can make a difference to many, many people. Those that think of this as a joke are most probably in debt and contributed to the mentality that got us where we are.

Or well off enough since we avoided going into to much debt and spent our money wisely to laugh, because it won't be noticed.

But yes for some the extra $50 a month will be the difference between them paying the Visa or not.

For the smokers out there, not enough to buy two packs of cigs a week once the tobacco tax increaes kicks in this summer. And what class of folks are the majority of smokers? Mid to lower on the economic ladder, that's who. The ones who need the help the most. The losers.

Smoke 'em if you got 'em.

Aww, how terrible. I know it must be horrible to not get extra money when you "only" make $75k+ a year.

What about those of use that can't find a job, and make no where remotely near that amount? Would you like us to forward our stimulus money to you, so you can have some extra cash?

People complain, too much. "Woe is me, I only make enough to live comfortably"

Paying what? Taxes? I am fine with paying taxes. I'd gladly pay MORE taxes if it would get our roads fixed.

If I was making 75k a year and had a stable job, I'd be well beyond happy...and would care less about some extra taxes or not getting refund/stimulus money. Let it go to those who need it most.

I am not making much at all right now with this economy, and I am still happy....money doesn't buy happiness.
