I've been in a machinist (tool maker) "apprentice" for the past 4 years.

All work is either going to china, or is CNC made. Half my work is JUST fixing NC department misshaps or sanding/deburring/benching in parts.

Hence my move to Utah. Williams International, based in Walled Lake MI has a state of the art facility in Ogden manufacturing small fan-jet engines. They have no competition in their niche yet. Honda is the only one (partnering with Pratt and Whitney) to attempt to enter this market.

Automotive started drying up about 5 years ago in the Dayton, Ohio market as more things were sent to India.

we almost no automotive parts.

Our company makes composite hand-apply fixtures for drilling the skins of lockheed f-22, and f-35. We also see some boeing work (router trim fixtures) and the like. Other departments make CMM checking fixtures, Alumn. parts for BAE systems.

Besides doing some fiber layups, I really dont care for the work at all.

I hear all the stories from the truly experienced machinists. panel tipping, bomb-sighting holes in......

unfortunately, I am not a machinist's apprentice - I was using the term loosely. I would like to have the ability to do some minor work with the right tools for private purposes. Thank you for the detailed information.
