Antique" computer question

I have an OLD IBM ThinkPad operating under Windows98SE. I KNOW its a relic. Its also a bit disposable, so I can take it in my camper, and if something happens, no big deal. Many campsite now offer WiFi, so keeping in touch while on the road is easier. This computer has a build-in modem for wired connection.
Does anyone know if a wireless moden exists for this? Where might I find one, and what would I expect to pay?
Thanks.

Belkin makes a wireless USB unit. They're probably around $40. They're decent, usually connect at about 5MPS but they can get 11MPS on a really clear connection. Range isn't all that great but what do you expect for $40?

Bestbuy, Walmart, Target, Officemax, anyplace which sells computer accessories or order one online.

USB would probably overwhelm a laptop that old.....it'd be reeeeally slow. I'd try and get a cheap PCMCIA card slot Wireless card. (wireless B 11MBps) would be plenty. Can probably get a used one on ebay for like $5.

Yup, that's a good option also. I wasn't sure if the Thinkpad even had a PCMIA port.

Is USB even supported by 98SE? Or is it NT 4.0 that wouldn't recognize it?

I have one of these lying around here at the house. They work well. If you in the Guatemala area, swing by and I will give it to you!

Unless it's a really old TP, there should be a PCMCIA card slot or two, possibly even a USB 1.1 port. I just got rid of a TP600 (Pentium II, max 288mb ram) that had both. I installed Win2K on it with a Linksys Wireless G PCMCIA card. Worked fine with decent speed on the 'net provided that the hard drive was kept fairly empty to handle the memory swap because of the low amount of system ram.

98 is not so good with USB - plus the current crop of peripherals hardly support it any more.

Thanks for the replies. There is a USB connection. What does a PCMCIA slot look like?

PCMCIA is usually 2 and in some cases 1 slot on either side of the laptop. I have a Thinkpad T42 here and there are 2 slots on the left side near the front - one staced on top of another with 2 release buttons and flap like doors over the slots.

PCMCIA cards are roughly credit card sized and about 3/16" thick.

What model Thinkpad?

I have that same Linksys card too....I got it like 4 years ago for $18....so I would guess that now its next to nothing. Its worked very well when I use it....its semi-retired now since my current laptop has built in wireless....

It is certain to have a PCMCIA slot, those have been on the IBM's since way back when their 486 models were selling for $6,000. It was the primary method for addons.

That USB will be slower than molasses.

PCMCIA slot is around as wide as a credit card. The slot, is probably about 5mm tall - maybe a little less.
