Computer speed verses ISP speed.
I have a question about ISP down load speed and ISP down load speed.
I currently have broad band cable and using speedtest.net I have seen speeds as high as 18MB and as low as 4MB. My question is this, even though the site says 18MB down load speed, is the computer actually down loading at this speed or is there a cap at what a PC can handle based on it's configuration? I am having U-Verse installed next week and I am getting the elite package which is capped at 6MB. I do some gaming on line (Joint Operations) and I am not sure whether or not the PC is actually using the down load speed to its advantage or if lets say it is capped at 5 MB and anything more is a waste. Is there a way to test what my PC can actually handle? Can I see what my game is actually using when I play? Thanks

I'm not 100% certain but I think that even a basic, older laptop/PC data bus is orders of magnitude faster than any broadband connection. Most of the time the PC is waiting for the network.

Many wired network adapters are 10Mb max
Wireless B is theoretically capable of 10Mb. wireless G is theoretically capable of 54Mb. In actuality, both are substantially lower in actual data throughput. Newer wired systems have 100Mb and even 1Gb theoretical data transfer capability. Even that rating you got on the speed site is under optimum conditions that may not match what you actually get.

Your computer is capped by it's hardware or software bottlenecks. Network hardware caps are the speed at which they can receive/send data 10Mbps, 100Mbps or 1000Mbps. The cable or DSL, FiOS speeds can exceed the former but not the latter (unless you're really lucky). Same goes for WiFi, 11Mbps, 22Mbps, 54Mbps, 300Mbps etc.

Is there a way to figure out what my hardware caps are?
Also, is there a program that will tell me what bandwidth my programs are using?
