As long as you do not have any blood sugar issues, you should be fine.
A buddy of mine at the gym is I would guess pushing 63, he is a middle school counselor and has worked out/played tennis his whole life -- and he told me he has been fasting on Fridays (not for religious reasons) for years. He swears by it. I will get details on whether or not he eats any food that day. I know he consumes liquids.....but which ones I don't know. A big fat ass guy during high school was seen at the 10 year reunion, and he was looking svelt! When I tell you he was a fat ass, his fat under his upper arms was hanging with grotesque and sickening dimples, similiar to the back of a woman's legs with cellulite. Well, his secret was never eating anything after 7 p.m., period. Never, ever eat after 7 p.m., and of course eat ONLY betweem 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

I think you should diagnose your diet and consider adjustments across the board instead of "one per week fasting'. Metabolism slows down with age, that's normal. Drop beer, milk products, bread, sugars, sodas (carbonated water, corn syrup), increase water intake foods with high water and fiber content and keep your digestive system at top performance. Also, the consumption of Ionized Alkaline Water will counter overall acidity in your body and possibly harmonize your body's ph level.

Some years ago, a friend of mine was into fasting. He said that once he got started for a few days, the hardest part was starting to eat again.

I have fasted a few times. I was following a cleansing diet, the Master Cleanse. You could drink as much leamonade as you wanted. The first cleanse was the hardest. I fasted for three days. It is suppose to clean out the toxins.
The don't eat after 7pm, is kind of macribiotics. Also, reference Dr. Mark Hyman. He basically, recomends don't eat two hours before you go to bed. It messes up your metabolic rate. Tom |

I did it during a week in which I wasn't doing any particularly demanding physical or mental work. Also, I knew that I could stop fasting at any time - a luxury not shared by many who go hungry through other circumstances. Though I'm not interested in doing it again for a week, I am interested in the notion of trying to recognize when I'm consuming food out of habit rather than as a necessary part of a healthy diet. Thanks for bringing up the topic! |

Kerry, ride your bike to work.
I'd be really fat if I didn't ride my bike around in the summer. The way I eat...

I used to ride my bike to work. It's 13 miles one way. Uphill all the way there. I have a recumbent and I started getting knee problems so I quit.

I considered that but for a number of reasons, adjustment across the board was not that appealing to me. Too much regular discipline I think. Once a week fasting seemed like a more brainless and painless approach. I rarely drink beer and soda, although I do eat a lot of bread, sugars and milk products. Don't want to give them up.

I fast a day here and there for religious reasons. I fasted for a full 7 days about 10 years ago. The first two days were a bit difficult since my stomach reminded me fairly often that I was skipping meals. After a few days, I wasn't as aware of being hungry. I experienced getting a sharper focus on mental tasks around day four, but around day 6 I felt tired all the time. I could have gone more than 7 days, but I just felt drained and I only planned for 7 days at the start.
EDIT: I drank about 10 bottles of water everyday I fasted.

Cutting down massively on calorie intake for one day can trigger the body to store more of what you eat later as fat.
![]() The best method is to simply lower daily consumption a little, and toss in some extra exercise....that burns the most calories.

I've read about that starvation response. Are you sure one day is enough to trigger it?
