The Ventures
My company is getting offered a job in Hawaii and my boss has my coworker filling out the paper work to get his State of Hawaii PE license. he turns to me, and says "you know how cool the State of Hawaii is? they have Hawaiian music as the hold music!"
My other coworker looks at me and says "what is Hawaiian music?" I replay "I don't know, The Ventures?" Well that lead to me listening to The Ventures all after noon. Reliving some pretty fun memories from high school (2000ish). My best friend in high school had a perfect 72 Challenger black on black. and he had this hula girl on the console and he use to driver crazy in that car and we'd watch the hula girl shake. Those were some fun times. I figured I can't be the only one who enjoyed their music, or had fun times listening to them. ![]()

The Ventures fall in the category of California surf culture, not Hawaii. Along with The Beach Boys, Jan & Dean, Dick Dale and Deltones.

My friend and I actually stole the CD from his dad who built hot rods. It is California music, but most people think of Hawaii because they did the theme to Hawaii Five-O.

It is a common mistake since most American children believe that Hawaii is located just south. ![]() |

Even though their first album liner states, "the CA based band...," it's incorrect. Founding members, Bob Bogle (lead guitar) is from Portland and Don Wilson (rythm guitar) is from Seattle. They still live in the Northwest. All this stuff about surf music isn't exactly correct either. Their first 4 albums - which brought them to fame and contained their best work such as "Walk, Don't Run," "Perfidia," "Lullabye of the Leaves," "Blue Moon," "Ghost Riders in the Sky," etc - had no surf music. The surf thing didn't start until well after they were established as a serious band. The early stuff they played took talent where surf music didn't. Unfortunately, they became labeled "surf band" after doing the theme to the TV series, "Hawaii 5O."
