I disagree. Even in the People's Democratic Socialist Republik of Michigan, there's a season and location restrictions on deer hunting with a pistol.

Right after World War II, the famous sportsman Elmer Keith, a respected writer and outdoorsman, started to popularize deer hunting with a long barrel .357 Magnum pistol and low-power scope, which he said, required more skill AND was safer: the bullet's range was much more limited than the one mile range of a 30-.06 or a .338 Winchester. But it could still kill deer up to 300 yards max- one sixth of a mile.

Later, when the .44 magnum came out, long before Dirty Harry, it was manufactured in a single-shot AND a six-shot single-action revolver with a 12" barrel. Barely three inches under the limit of a concealed weapon!
Strictly a sports gun.

There's also the .221 Thompson single shot BOLT ACTION pistol, and later versions too.

The new Ruger .480 is made for defense in Alaska AND there is a version for hunting bear or protecting yourself from them. Again, 8-10" barrel.

After I save up for a Ruger .480, I'll go hunting in Upper Michigan where there are no people and no pollution and bring down a small deer in a safe, clean and sportmanlike way.

With a bow.

The handgun will be there to fend off the bear.

Of course not. But some people just need to feel threatened to justify their paranoia.

So this is why Rep. Bobby Rush [D, IL-1] introduced/Sponsor of this bill?

I have no idea why the bill was introduced. Could be Rush was responding to his constituents. I think some kind of gun law was recently upheld by a court in Illinois.

That's too bad.

I'm with Rich on this. I don't see how this would be any more difficult than getting a driver's license or registering a car. It doesn't seem like those requirements are keeping people off the roads. But if this thing has no chance of passing, this whole discussion is rather moot.

Looks much like CAlifornia law. Nothing new here.

It's not very sporting to kill something that doesn't know you're there, and from far away. Hand to hand though, that would be sporting.

Yea, I guess you could hunt deer with a pistol.

But can you actually kill one.

Has anyone here actually snuck up on a deer with a pistol and killed it ?

I took down a 2 year old doe with my S&W .357 about 3 years ago. She was tasty! I was in my stand, and she walked directly underneath me, and into my line of fire.

I don't plan on tempting fate with a bear that way, but what if I did it at night with a doe? Nope, illegal:That's poaching because you can't hunt after dark.

I'll stick with a bow.

Or a snare then strangle it. Is that more sportsmanlike?

According to Tank, you should have jumped in front of her, wrestled her to the ground and broke her neck.Of course the meat will taste terrible, laced with adrenalin, but hey, that's more sporting.

So far, I have killed 6 in the last 9 years with a pistol. 44 mag, 454 Casull and 50 S&W Mag.

Never tried that. That comes under "still hunting". That isn't the only way to do it. You can sit in a tree stand or ground blind to do that. All with a pistol. Makes the hunt more challenging when your range is way limited. I can easily kill deer at 200 yards with a rifle. Pistol, 100 yards is difficult even with a scope. This year, I plan to hunt black bear over bait with a pistol too. Not sure what I will end up using but there it is.

It is interesting to observe how "gun rights" quickly devolve to "hunting" issues.
I do not think the Founders had hunting in mind as they formulated the 2nd Amendment.
