Chevy Chase vs. Bill Murray

so somehow this discussion started up at work and then devolved into a pretty heated argument. basically it was a "who's funnier, chevy chase or bill murray" conversation to begin with and then turned into a "young people don't know anything" kind of thing. the argument being that the only reason a young person might say bill murray is funnier is because of their familiarity with his new love affair with wes anderson. some people wanted to get technical and say "so and so is funnier but the other one had better scripts to work with and therefore seemed funnier." anyway, thought i'd bring it to the forum and see what you guys had to say.

i still haven't made up my mind. fletch vs. groundhogs day.....that's tough to call. both of them were amazing in caddyshack....and i have to say that i love the wes anderson stuff bill murray has done. but can you beat national lampoons european vacation??? ghostbusters???

Hmm. For me the tough one is What About Bob v Spies Like Us
Modern Problems was pretty good too.

I think Spies Like Us nudges it in Chase's favor

Chase is not funny at all now though

I think Murray is a much better actor, and both of them are more silly than funny.

Although I like both of them I have never really thought either one is a very good actor and not very funny either.

Although Chase used to be really great as Jerry Ford. He had the falling thing down pat!

No contest Bill Murray.
A true actor, I think most would agree, is Dustin Hoffman, Meryl Streep, or Forest Whitager. It's hard to know the actor's ability in just commedy. That being said, Murray's Groundhog Day is hilarious. Additionally, I always thought Chevy Chase was a bit boring - the story lines in Lampoon's Vacation & Christmas make the films - but I thought he did a fine job recently playing the part of a deranged father on a Law & Order series. He actually made me believe he was someone other than Chevy Chase.

There is a credible argument that the "Best Actor" in Caddyshack was either Bill Murray

or

Ted Knight

I think not. The gopher was obviously better than both them put together. Chase did apear in a music video with Paul Simon. I would vote Murry. I would also put Steve Martin in the arguement. I'd still say Murray though. I'm not a big fan of any of them though.
