Now this is a sports car!
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1966-SHELBY-COBRA-REPLICA-427-V8-4-SPEED-TRANSMISSION_W0QQitemZ230353040056QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUS_Cars_Trucks?hash=item35a21c72b8&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245&_trkparms=65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C72%3A317
Since the real ones are just to pricey, the replica's can be nice. I have always loved the way the Cobra looked, and if I got one I'd want obscene amounts of power, 427 juiced up. I'd also straight pipe it. Nothing like an American V8 with straight pipes to wake the neighbors up at 6am on a Saturday morning! The thing about these cars that have always appealed to me, is that they are American, and look fantastic. They are also VERY loud, and brutal. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-VGbyUPp2w&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QTmakWYItq8&feature=related

It was a well balanced sports car before Shelby got his hands on it and stuck a V8 in it They were British really, but with a big V8. So best of both worlds. Small good handling car with a lot of power. I have seen a couple on the freeways and I can only assume they're kit cars... look great though.

I'm wondering how the MB 3 liter diesel V-6 would do in one of those. Would be spendy to get ahold of I can only imagine -- you'd have to luck into a totaled 320CDI or the like with an intact engine, low mileage preferable.
But those rigs will do 0 to 60 in 6 seconds, and while pulling, I'm guessing, can't find it right now, 3500 to 3800 lbs. Imagine that engine in a 2000 pound Cobra?

Ah come on, I'd rather my sports car rev up to at least 6500+ RPM.

Wonder when this one was built? And, is there one resource for all these "kit" cars. For $66K, I'd be leery of the whole clone deal. Doesn't mean it's not worth it, but like a guy recently was asking like $69K for a car that he claimed would sell for up to $239K.....uh-huh, of course it would........somebody hand me my hip-boots 'n waders.... Unless one really knows the market on them, I'd steer clear until I spent a lot of months researching them in person, from a lot of people in that Shelby field.

I, too have been a fan of the Cobra since I saw my first one in 1966. It was coming down the road at some incredible rate of speed and turned in to a gas station and stopped more rapidly that I though possible. No drama or tire squealing; just unbelievably quick, especially in the turn.
My dream cobra has always been the small block version. While the FE can bring on the power, that extra 200-400 pounds has an effect on the cornering. I have always thought the small block version to be the more pure sports car while the BB version was more of a muscle car. Don't burn the back of your legs getting out after a hard run--those side pipes can get awfully hot.

I prefer the looks of the small block over the 427 as well.
Years ago I remember reading an article about bolt - bolt perfect replicas being made in eastern Europe by an American contracting with a former MiG parts factory. |

You can fix that.

A Cobra isn't a Cobra w/o a side oiler.

Surely they aren't asking that much for a car that the hood emblem and scoop aren't on the same centerline...
The car isn't far from me...about 40 miles. I may mosey down there this next week and take a look at it to see just what else is wrong...

There were several YEARS of production of the "original" Cobra that were Small blocks ( 260 and 289).
You may prefer the big blocks, but you just can't say that the side oiler is the only way to go.

spelling counts -oops not the same place Hatty linked
I originally misread Hatty's message. There is a small cobra kit company nearby that is
SuperPerformance ( with a P). I looked for a link but didn't see one. Here is one of their kits that sold. They seem to have a few cars out front all the time. I haven't stopped but from the road the cars look very good. http://www.collectorcarads.com/Other-Cobra/23669 My ex-BIL built a cobra kit about 15 years ago. He paid about $20K for a full rolling chassis and fiberglass body. The mechanicals went pretty easy. He put in a 351 Cleveland / 4 speed toploader. That is all his insurance company would cover. The body / interior took forever. He made a mistake registering it. He could have chosen the chassis age or engine age. He chose the chassis thinking it was good to be newer, but then had to meet emissions. Finally solved that with a Pro-jection unit from Holley. Even with "just" the 351 in it that car would scream. I would want an aluminum small block. Ford used to sell them.
He doesn't state the body material on that car, so I think we have to assume that it is fiberglass. Are there any repos with aluminum bodies? The original deal with the aluminum body is so valuable that you would have to have excessive money to just burn, or just be a fool to ever take it on the street. |
