No idea if the material quality is superior or not and as I've not sat in one I can't judge the ergonomics. However I was commenting on the look of the thing. Simply the visual impression which I find unpleasant.

I can't say I agree either. I drove a new CLK and C350 and I wasn't impressed with it at all. The electronic throttle really pissed me off. There is a delay beteen the pedal and the electric throttle actuator making it seem as though the engine hesitates and that gets very annoying in traffic. I was glad to get back in my W123.

I have had the "pleasure" of driving a newer 750 and the shifter, stereo controls are counter-intuitive. I don't like the idea either, but I imagine we will get used to it. More "technology for the sake of technology"

I've seen photos of W123s with column shifters.

The new e coupe still has the shifter on the console like before.

main reson for shifter on the column, is to free up real estate in the console.

Personally, I love both the cars, console shifter or not, the new E/E coupe is hot.
