 If you want a small fun car I suggest a first generation Toyota Mr2. You can get a decent one around here for around 1k, they get good mileage, they are mid-engined and RWD, get good (30+) mileage and are fun to drive.

A classic mini would be a ball to drive but murder to keep running. The motor oil and tranny oil are comingled and the motor is not known for longivity.
The Miata is small durable, very autocrossable and plentiful. You can also get anything for it you can imagine. I'm having a ball with mine.

Second the Miata.. it would be a great complement to your SDL. They are good DIY cars too especially the first gens. Lots of room under the hood. When you want to have fun, drive that, when you want to relax, take the SDL.

Replace the upper and lower control arm bushings if you are bored, I was meaning to do those.
I never had trouble finding stuff to do on that car.
