Unbelieveable!
Has anybody seen this?
WASHINGTON – NASA could put a man on the moon but didn't have the sense to keep the original video of the live TV transmission. In an embarrassing acknowledgment, the space agency said Thursday that it must have erased the Apollo 11 moon footage years ago so that it could reuse the videotape. But now Hollywood is coming to the rescue. The studio wizards who restored "Casablanca" are digitally sharpening and cleaning up the ghostly, grainy footage of the moon landing, making it even better than what TV viewers saw on July 20, 1969. They are doing it by working from four copies that NASA scrounged from around the world. "There's nothing being created; there's nothing being manufactured," said NASA senior engineer Dick Nafzger, who is in charge of the project. "You can now see the detail that's coming out." The first batch of restored footage was released just in time for the 40th anniversary of the "one giant leap for mankind," and some of the details seem new because of their sharpness. Originally, astronaut Neil Armstrong's face visor was too fuzzy to be seen clearly. The upgraded video of Earth's first moonwalker shows the visor and a reflection in it. I heard it being discussed on NPR yesterday.

Yup I saw that on Yahoo news today, amazing that it happened! They must have thought they had backups somewhere or something.

Meanwhile, I'm sure there are miles and miles of video tape of stuff NObody cares about!

Erased? I doubt it. Stolen, more than likely.

Yep, they kept this pretty quiet...they've been looking for the stuff for over two years...the interesting history of what we saw back in '69 was the fact that the data rate of the information coming back from the moon was so slow that the tape they used and were looking for was actually 1" data tape, slow-scanned video (10-frames/second, non-interlaced) (normal video tape, in '69, was 30-frames/second, interlaced), and that video had to share space on that tape with 13 other data tracks (most of the data was space-ship parameters and telemetry...)
What we saw at home was the video from a camera, pointed at a video screen of the "demodulated" 10-frames/second video/audio being shown at the space-center...that was the "Hi-Tech" version of a standards converter from that day... Sorta' like making a cassette recording of your favorite record from your sister's "Close & Play" record player...holding the microphone up to the speaker...

Great...you have the tape...now, what do you play it on?
Sorta' like the Sylvester the Cat cartoon where he's left alone in the house with tons of cat food (Granny goes on a long weekend visit away...) and he has no can-opener! They "suppose" that to save money, someone erased the tape to use over again... The "Bean-head" did it!!! ("Bean-head" is not intended to reference any ethnic minority, area majority or any personage of any race, color or creed, sexual-oriented one or the other or anyone that can dance better than white folks...it's intened to indicate someone that counts for a living...such as the guy that signs your paycheck or questions EVERY FRICKIN' THING on your expense-account statement...) (Batteries not included...collect them all...some assembly may be required...)

Oh, right. You mean all those people who think we never even landed on the Moon in the first place. Yeah, I didn't think of that.
