Question Volvo starting issues ~ Anyone know Volvo's?

I have a problem with the starter that has me stumped.
It won't start at all, no noise, no clicking sound, nothing when the key is turned. I jumped power right to the starter and it didn't do anything so I do need a new starter but, here's the thing, the small line going to the solenoid has power all the time. This line should only have power when the key is turned to the start position right? How do you troubleshoot this?

I don't know if it matters but last week I had a problem getting spark. The starter worked fine. It was the fuse on the firewall by the power steering that blew. This line comes right off the battery. I accidentally let it go and it shorted out on the frame.
It sparked for a little bit and actually burned some of the oil on the side of the power stering sump.

This more than likely has something to do with the problems I'm having now.

any thought or help will be appreciated

BTW are the Duralast rebuilt starters from Autozone any good?

Danny

If it is an older Volvo, I had a friend tell me if you have bumped anything slammed on the break real hard, there is a switch just under the shifter that locks and won't let you start the car until it has been reset. I think it has something to do with keeping someone from towing it off. Just my 2 cents worth.

Which car? On the 850's and S/V 70's the electrical portion of the ignition switch can fail. Same as some of the mid 90's VW's. Causes all kinds of Wonky problems.

The small wire should only have voltage when the key is in start position. There's a chance you fried the ignition switch when the wire got away and grounded.
Did you check that small wire while it was connected or disconnected to the solenoid?
Could be you have a bad solenoid.

Sorry, It's a 1986 240 DL.

The wire has voltage disconnected from the solenoid.

I'm going to go out a see if I can troubleshoot it. Wish me luck!
