CIA Assassination Squads

Washinton Post story:

CIA officials were proposing to activate a plan to train anti-terrorist assassination teams overseas when agency managers brought the secret program to the attention of CIA Director Leon Panetta last month, according to two U.S. officials familiar with the matter.

David Letterman's story:

Well, now it turns out that for eight years, Dick Cheney had a secret hit squad to assassinate al Qaeda leaders. And the team was unbelievable. Here’s who was on the team: Lee Marvin; Jim Brown; John Cassavetes; Telly Savales; and Trini Lopez as Pedro.

I like the concept, but something about trusting the CIA to run the program really bothers me. I'd rather have the Military do the dirty deeds because of their command and control structure.

Anyone who thinks that doesn't happen is very naive! They can spin it anyway they want to appease the public, but behind closed doors, they exist!

I hope it already happens. Fighting terrorist's a single bullit can be just as affective and maybe more so, than a bunker buster.

I agree that these squads are necessary in today's world, but why make it a secret? It's time to stop coddling the American public and fight fire with fire, rather than creating huge delays at airports with nonsensical security checks.

And for training, the best teachers are the Isrealis. They have had to deal with this problem since 1948. I have always admired how after an attack in Israel, the next day proceeds as usual and buildings are reconstructed or repaired immediately, thus giving the terrorists a sense of little accomplished. But not us. We spend years mourning and bickering over what to put in place of the Twin Towers in NY. We play right into the hands of terrorists. Those towers should have been replaced long ago and in their exact originality - thus showing that terrorist have accomplished nothing.

I doubt it. Just thinking about for a few minutes, I can understand why it was considered unfeasible. You'd have to get lucky to have a team in a place they could strike from while information was still good.

Its totaly feasable.

Naturaly if you got info that a target was in an area you would have to investigate and confirm before sending in a team.

Isreal is very, very good at this, as are the French.

If Israel were as good as their boasting, or their rep, they'd never have a terrorist attack. Of course they have one significant advantage the US lacks. They are in close physical proximity to their targets and in many instances share many cultural connections which enables them to infiltrate far better than the US will be able to.

I agree with you

The towers should have been built right back up.

However, I think the CIA could not shoot their way out of a paper bag with a bazooka. All the PolMil guys whop could have done this were "retired" by Pres. Carter and Clinton. Bush did not rebuild that capability as it us proscribed by law now to commit assassinations by the government against a foreign leader.

I am sure the CIA kicks this idea around, but I doubt even IF Obama and Panetta say "OK, do it" they could get it done...

This is not Vietnam where the CIA could do what it wanted.
