Pretty sad story

The United States is in a small minority of industrialized nations that have failed to address the tragedies that result from talking on cell phones while driving

Very sad.

On the same lines:
I looked over one day just in time to see a girl come up beside me at a red light while holding a cell phone in both hands (Texting I’d guess.) and steering with her elbows.

She hit the stopped car in front of her hard enough that the airbag all but drove that cell phone up her nose. The ambi crew said that the position she was in when the bag went off broke both of her arms.

The lady she hit was shook up, but ok.

Yes, I did tell the police what I saw.

Let's be careful out there.

In CT you can't drive and talk, your supposed to use a headset.

Texting is the real killer, I have tried it, its just about impossible to text and drive without killing yourself. I put it on the same level as driving after downing a bottle of whiskey. It really should be treated as a DUI, in court.

I see people texting while driving all the time, and it drives me mad!!! What is going through their heads!? If someone ever hits me because of that, I am going to find and pulverize their phone.

I don't even use text messaging, its stupid. Call if you want to communicate. Or send me an e-mail and I'll read it when I please. I blocked all texting capabilities on my phone account a long time ago.

What I don't understand is why the US legal system overly emphasizes intention over the result. I mean they both matter, but the result should IMO have more weight than it currently does. For example, you can go to prison for years for mere conspiracy to have sex with an underage person, but killing that person while running a red light or being intoxicated is much lesser crime. WTF?

there are the ones that are in front of me at a red light yakking on the cell phone when the light turns green. half the time they are truly oblivious to the fact the light just turned GREEN and remain motionless. I give 'em a quick blip on the 560's horn which usually gets their foot off the brake and on the go pedal. all the while yakking/texting up a storm......

most people don't realize that their was a major shift in the legal system around the mid 1930's. prior to that there HAD to be a victim who suffered REAL damages before their was an actual crime or cause for action. the "state" could not claim to be the victim. actions really were brought in the name of the victim and it was easy for a jury to understand the issues.

post 1939 with the codification of the "law" and nowadays the "state" claims to be the victim in the proceedings. legal crap if you ask me and a tremendous waste of resources (jury, judges pay, light bills for the court room, etc. etc.) in 2003, many of the courts obtained credit ratings on Dun and Bradstreet. look it up, the courts are now a business and it appears they may get a better credit rating based on the $$$$$ they bring in the door, much like any other business. turn a man upside down and see how many nickels fall out. the more the better.....

I see drivers reading paperback novels; driving while their left foot is out the window; holding plates and forks; dogs in driver's laps . . .

For some reason as I was reading your post I was imagining a driver doing all of that at the same time. That would be quite impressive!

Seeing drivers reading books and eating cereal with milk form a bowl with a spoon (yes I have seen both on I-270 near DC) make me want to turn in my license! I admit I talk on the phone, but it is as simple as sayin "I am in the car, I'll call you back"

I saw some moron texting the other day on I-95 doing 70mph!

People doing that should have their phones shoved so far up their @sses that when it rings the sound comes out of their mouths!

Question: besides, the cell phone lobbyists and $, WHY is talking and texting while driving allowed?

As the saying goes, there should be a law, as some prior poster stated in CT, one must, at a minumum, only use a hands free device. But as far as I know, very few states have enacted such legislation, much less enforce any rules disallowing cell phone usage.

Do foreign countries, such as Germany, where operation of an automobile is taken with more seriousness, allow talking/texting? I 'd bet not.
